When I moved to Florida a year ago, I could not wait to attend my first event at the Riverside Theatre. I had read about their events in local publications and knew attendees who just raved about the performances. My first show was to see South Pacific, starring David Pittsinger as Emile de Becque and his talent and the show itself blew me away. Having been a NYC theatergoer for years, I was afraid I would miss being able to run to the latest shows, but between Riverside Theatre and other nearby theaters, such as Fort Lauderdale, it turns out I am completely satisfied. I went right away to sign up to be a volunteer.
The Stark or Main Stage is where all the Broadway events take place. This 674 seat venue is comfortable and spacious, with plenty of leg room. I prefer to splurge for the orchestra seats, but the balcony seats also offer decent views for a much cheaper price. Consider saving money by buying the season package, $120-$232, which includes 4 shows. If you are looking for deals, volunteer at the theater and you can possibly see them all for free.
This 2014 season offers six performances:
The Bikinis- A Musical Beach Party Oct 28-Nov 16
Crazy For You Jan 13-Feb 1
Underneath The Lintel Jan 27-Feb 8
West Side Story Feb 17-Mar 8
Side By Side By Sondheim Mar 10-Mar 22
Memphis Apr 7- Apr 26
The 2014-15 season kicks off with The Bikinis- The 60’s Musical Beach Party, beginning October 28th and running through November 16th. Focused on a group of friends that won a talent contest wearing just their bikinis, the girls reunite after twenty years to raise money for the Sandy Shore Mobile Beach Resort, reliving their two decades through comedy and song. I am anxious to hear “These Boots Are Made For Walkin'”, “It’s Raining Men”, and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”.
The Riverside Children’s Theatre has many age appropriate performances and special events throughout the year. Alice in Wonderland shows in October, and some other eye catching events include the Princess Breakfast in February and the Neverland Adventure in March. The Children’s Theatre also offers camps, classes, and training in theatre, dance, and music throughout the year.
On the Waxlax Stage of the Riverside Theatre, come experience great comedy performances at 7:30 or 9:30 PM show times. The theater is a great thing to do on the weekend and brings in top notch comedy acts. Check out their times here.
If you are in the mood for some live music, visit the Outside Terrace, the free outdoor music venue featuring local bands and musicians beginning at 6:30 pm on nights when the Comedy Zone is running. Grilled specialties and desserts are available for purchase, as well as cocktails, wine, and beer.
