If you are a fan of Southern cooking magazines, chances are that you have seen Gainesville, Florida’s Blue Gill Quality Foods mentioned a time or two. After reading about it, I added it to my list of “places to eat” one day. On a recent trip to Gainesville, I finally had the chance to visit Blue Gill Quality Foods. In fact, I started my trip there!
Brunching at Blue Gill Quality Foods
My daughter, Taylor, and I arrived at Blue Gill Quality Foods in time for Sunday Brunch. Due to all of the construction and enormous hospital campus located behind the restaurant, parking was a little confusing. After a few attempts, we finally found the entrance to the garage behind the restaurant. Prepay for your parking in the garage; bring your receipt to the restaurant to get reimbursed.
I am a big brunch fan because my favorite food is Eggs Benedict and most restaurants have it on the menu. However, after perusing Blue Gill Quality Food’s menu, I did something I hardly ever do; I deviated and ordered something different.
How Will I Ever Choose From This Incredible Menu?
Taylor and I had a hard time choosing from Blue Gill’s tantalizing brunch options. I finally decided on the Blue Gill Breakfast and Taylor chose the Maple-Cinnamon Waffle. She also had a Mimosa, one of the three brunch cocktails available. The other two were a Bloody Mary (regular or hot) or Poinsettia (sparkling wine + cranberry juice).
Since everything coming out of the kitchen looked great and the prices were reasonable, we had two appetizers: Fried Green Tomatoes and Chorizo Clam Fritters. The fritters were finger-licking good with pickled onion and red pepper inside, served with spicy mayo for dipping. I am a sucker for fried green tomatoes and this was one of the most innovative recipes that I have ever tried. First, the tomatoes were cut into small squares and battered/fried. A smoky bacon dressing topped the tomatoes with diced onion and cucumber. The dish was smoky in taste, but made my taste buds do a little celebration dance. Yum!
Blue Gill’s Photogenic Plates
Our meals arrived and I loved the presentation so much that I took way too many pictures, giving the other guests a chuckle from my behavior. Taylor’s waffle was doused in a light but decadent cinnamon whipped cream and served with a side of crispy bacon. I am not typically a sweet eater but this waffle was sublime!
My Blue Gill Breakfast was amazing, consisting of two very large eggs with ham, a biscuit with sausage gravy, and hot bacon-potato salad. Yes, you read that right, hot potato salad. Where to start? The eggs were cooked over medium to perfection and the salty but sweet country style ham impressed me as it was healthy unlike most restaurants’ ham. The biscuit (hard edges=thumbs up!) and gravy were spot on and a little sweet, but the tangy and zesty hot bacon-potato salad was ultimate! I could taste both vinegar and mustard in the dressing. I am not sure what they did to this relatively simple dish to make it unbelievably good, but it worked. This item is definitely going on my Best Eats of 2017 list.
Treat Yourself to Brunch Perfection
This is by far one of Florida’s best foodie spots that I have found. Enjoy Blue Gill’s happy hour Monday through Friday from 3-6PM. I was blown away by my perfect dining experience at Blue Gill Quality Foods. Perhaps I will cook up some of their recipes at my own home from their beautiful cookbook that I brought home with me. I hope to visit their other restaurants (Mildred’s Big City Food and New Deal Cafe) and try lunch or dinner on my next visit.
