Recently, my husband, Eddie, and I discovered one of the best places to dine in Panama City, Panama. The La Vespa Restaurant and Cocktail Bar is a modern restaurant located in the Obarrio part of downtown. After being dazzled by their food, service, and menu options, it is no wonder it is ranked so highly on Trip Advisor. After only being in business for two years, La Vespa was a 2016 Certificate of Excellence award winner.
Classy Restaurant in the Heart of Obarrio
The curb appeal at La Vespa is great! They have a cute patio with a big screen TV and a fun “grass” wall. The inside of the restaurant is more casual with high top tables while the bar area is both trendy and chic. Surprisingly, La Vespa has a more formal feel at lunchtime due to its upscale work clientele that come to eat here.
Eddie and I chose a seat at the bar and were greeted by a server who really paid attention to detail. After much consideration, we chose to start with the House-made Burrata. Our server asked if we wanted flatbread to go with the Burrata and we said yes. When the Burrata came out, we nearly gasped in surprise as the flatbread was the size of a large pizza. The oil and vinegar at the table provided the perfect compliment for the ultra creamy Burrata. It was delicious!
For lunch, Eddie chose a Prosciutto Pizza that had hot oil sauce and I selected one of my favorite dishes, Risotto Porcini E Tartufo (or Mushroom Risotto). Eddie enjoyed a few cocktails while we waited for our food. He insisted that La Vespa made the best margarita in the whole country.
Relaxing Atmosphere, Savvy Food Choices
Eddie’s pizza was large and topped with mozzarella, tomatoes, and York ham (Prosciutto). Mine, on the other hand, was a fancy production; one that the entire restaurant turned around to see. The ooey gooey Porcini Risotto was served in the traditional Italian style where the server heats the enormous cheese round and then mixes it with the risotto. Of course I had to video it. As our server scraped the bits of cheese from the inside rind, the dish thickened up and glowed on the plate. Pure excellence right here! This was hands down the most decadent thing that I have ever eaten in the entire country of Panama. Best of all, it had plenty of Porcini mushrooms, sinful truffle butter, and huge amounts of Grana cheese.
More Than Just a Good Meal
La Vespa is not only the name of the restaurant, but also a theme of the inside decor. While browsing the restaurant for pictures, I saw the chef kneading a hearty dough portion for homemade bread and pizza crusts. I was pleased to see that they did not take shortcuts but rather prepared everything homemade. The wonderful taste of our foods made that apparent.
On your next trip to Panama, it is worth the trip to taste the creations at La Vespa Restaurant. For those who live in Panama City, La Vespa offers delivery. How awesome is that?
