My daughter and I were driving from Florida to Mississippi and I had hoped that we would see a fair or carnival along the way. What are the chances, right? Within five minutes, we came upon a huge display of rides and concession stands and I jumping out of my seat to get there. We proceeded to the insanely crowded parking lots and walked to the entrance of this mystery event. It was preview day for the 25th anniversary of the National Georgia Fair in Perry, Georgia. Admission was half price for preview day, which was $6 per person.

Georgia grown products were featured at the first building upon arrival with products such as jellies, salsas, jerkies, cookbooks, and more. The rides are always my favorite attraction and they had some of my favorites: the Giant Dutch Wheel, Tilt-A-Whirl, The Hurricane, and Rock-o Planes. Rides require An armband or individual tickets.
Food kiosks were everywhere with yummy goodies like corn dogs, turkey legs, cotton candy, caramel apples, funnel cakes, snow cones, and peach cobbler. Like all fairs, livestock and horse shows are a main focus with events such as mule plowing demos, Boer and Dairy goat shows, Feathered horse shows, and youth organization events.
The Georgia Living Program portion of the fair exhibited a wide array of actives including woodcarvers, basket weaving, photography exhibits, sewing machine demos, and charity bake sales. Other forms of entertainment included a petting zoo, magic show, wakeboard show, racing pigs, and the Royal Hanneford Circus,. Interesting additions to this fair that I had not seen before were the Sea Lion Splash, a Comedy Pirate show, the Showboat Marionettes, Wild About Monkeys Show, and random strolling street acts.
Local concerts run periodically through the day and night. Oct 4 and 11th were the big nights with Lady Antebellum on the 4th and Jennifer Nettles on the 11th, both at additional charges. The preview night entertainment was a free concert by the Four Tops. Free fireworks occur nightly.
The fair runs Oct 2-12, 2014 in Perry, Georgia. Go here for more information.
Tip: Remember where you parked and which entrance you came in. The fairgrounds are huge and it is easy to get lost.
