Delaware, located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, boasts a rich history, beautiful beaches, and charming small towns. Despite its small size and population of under one million, Delaware offers numerous attractions for both travelers and locals. In this blog post, we will explore eleven fun things to do in Delaware.

1. Explore Dogfish Head in Milton

Take the opportunity to visit Dogfish Head Brewery, brewing unique and flavorful craft beers that will tantalize your taste buds. Tour the facility and sample the award-winning beers. Dogfish Head is renowned as one of Delaware’s top businesses, specializing in off-centered beer for “off-centered people.” 

Established in 1995, this famous brewery quickly gained recognition, producing 20 styles of beer and making it to the Top 50 Breweries in the US list. They have even expanded into handcrafted spirits. With an annual production of 240K barrels, Dogfish Head Brewery ranks 12th amongst 9552 breweries.

Their free year-round tours offer a fascinating look into their 200-barrel system, while the steampunk treehouse on the brewery lawn adds to the experience.

2. Attend the Brandywine Festival of the Arts

The Brandywine Festival of the Arts is an annual event (over 50 years) in Wilmington, Delaware, showcasing local artists and artisans. Browse through booths filled with paintings, jewelry, and pottery. Support local artists while enjoying a day out. With over 100 juried artists, this Wilmington art event has been going strong for 50+ years each September. Food trucks offer trendy bites.

Impressive and reasonably priced, the selection includes sculptures, jewelry, clothing, books, and pottery. A designated area for children’s arts and crafts, outdoor equipment, and face painting is available. Live music performances add to the experience. The Brandywine Zoo is on the hill behind the festival.

3. See the State Capitol in Dover

The State Capitol in Dover, Delaware, welcomes visitors with its beautiful architecture and rich history. 5. Tour Nemours Estate in Wilmington

The 47,000-square-foot Nemours Estate, a 300-acre property in Wilmington, was formerly owned by the DuPont family. It boasts a magnificent mansion, beautiful gardens, and charming fountains. Visitors can tour the mansion, explore the gardens, and enjoy outdoor concerts.

The mansion’s 77 rooms are adorned with an impressive art collection, antiques, and collectibles. Take advantage of the billiards room, library, morning room, and conservatory as you immerse yourself in the DuPont family’s daily life.

Outside, a French formal garden and tranquil fountains await. The estate’s grand gates were imported from Wimbledon Manor in London, and the Temple of Love, surrounded by Oriental and sunken gardens, features a captivating bronze statue that is sure to make for a memorable photograph. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids ages 6 to 16.

Pro Tip: Save time to check out the Chauffeur’s garage, which houses a delightful selection of Rolls Royces, including one elegantly crafted in Blueberry Blue (the only time the color was used), alongside Cadillacs and other classic cars.

6. Frolic on Rehoboth Beach

Delaware has many beautiful beaches, but Rehoboth Beach is one of the most popular. Visitors can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and surfing, as well as various restaurants and shops along the boardwalk. Caution: you may never want to leave!

8. Visit the Air Mobility Command Museum

9. Be Impressed with the Zwaanendael Museum

The Zwaanendael Museum, built in 1931, commemorates Delaware’s first European settlers. Its gabled roofs are adapted from Hoorn, Netherlands’ old town hall. The museum showcases military and maritime culture, with changing exhibits like Wine & Spirits, which depict Delaware’s alcohol trade. 

Enjoy admission with two floors of historical artifacts for hands-on exploration. Hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays, 10 AM to 4:15 PM.

10.  Browse the Delaware Art Museum

Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington is a must-visit for art enthusiasts. With its diverse collection encompassing American, pre-Raphaelite, and contemporary art, there’s something for everyone. Notable artists like Edward Hopper, Ansel Adams, and Rossetti are showcased alongside 18 remarkable outdoor sculptures. The museum store is worth a gander, too. 

Please note that the museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Admission fees are $14 for adults, $6 for children aged 7 to 18. Take advantage of free general admission on Thursdays from 4 to 8 PM, April through December.

11. Dine at Krazy Kat’s

The renovated blacksmith shop at Montchanin Village is home to Krazy Kat’s Restaurant, a unique dining experience. This 19th-century village, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, offers a glimpse into the past when workers from the DuPont powder mills resided here.

Krazy Kat’s Restaurant prides itself on its innovative and eclectic fine dining; the interior features animal print upholstery and a cozy fireplace, creating a charming ambiance. Guests can enjoy delicious French cuisine served on stylish leopard print china.

I'll be in the Baltimore area for a couple of days waiting for my flight to Chile. I can see getting to Wilmington is pretty straight forward, on the train. Is Wilmington nice for a day trip? This will be beginning of October.
