Brent’s Drugs is a nostalgic soda fountain restaurant in the heart of Fondren, Mississippi, the hipster neighborhood of the state’s capital Jackson. More impressively, I have recently learned that Brent’s was used twice in the filming of the movie “The Help“, starring Emma Stone and Jessica Chastain, based on NY Times best selling book.
Why We Went: My daughter and her boyfriend, Blake, treated his mother and I to lunch. I had read about Brent’s Drugs, a southern landmark, in magazines and wanted to try it.
What We Had: A little of everything: chicken fingers, the patty melt, yogurt/granola parfait cheese soup, pimento cheese sandwich, and cheeseburger. The sandwiches were all served with hand cut fries, which were delicious.
Something Special: This is a retro soda fountain, with both original and modernly updated booths, decorations, signs, and Taylor ice cream machines. Blake had a hot fudge sundae and I indulged in the chocolate malt. Neither one of them stood a chance.
Noteworthy: Though we did not try it, the egg and olive sandwich is their house specialty and a favorite of locals for many years.
Best Part of the Meal: The hand cut fries were pretty darned amazing. We all loved our meals and my creamy pimento cheese sandwich was spot on; the perfect lunch while visiting the south.
Bonus: The food quality was up to par though the prices were reasonably cheap. The lunch menu features a broad selection.
What Needs Improvement: The service started off strong. Our server was friendly and helpful in making our choices for lunch but then after our food came, she fizzled out and we hardly saw her.
Total Check Before Tip: I was treated!
