Why We Went: I had been hearing rave reviews about Boquete’s new Italian restaurant, Il Barolo, so my husband Eddie, and I, joined friends Peter and Pam for dinner there one night.
What We Had: We started off the evening with a bottle of red wine, the house Bruschetta, and Salmon Rolls. The dinners we chose were the daily special Pasta Burrata, Lasagna, and Risotto with Shrimp, paired with two Greek Salads to share.
Something Interesting: The daily special was a plate of penne pasta topped with a thick slab of cold mozzarella and topped with creamy Burrata. While the dish was tasty, I do not think the cheese should have been refrigerator temperature.
Something Special: The restaurant has a cute little outdoor patio to dine on as well as gorgeous views.
Oh-Oh: Our waitress forgot all about our salads. The meals arrived at the table and when we inquired about the salads we ordered, she hurried back to get them. About 10 minutes later, the salads arrived. Even though our dinner was in a different order than we are familiar with, they were very good and I really liked the house made dressing.
Ask: For bread if you want it.
Best Part of the Meal: The Salmon Rolls were delicious! There were only a few of them, but the fresh salmon wrapped around cream cheese on a bed of shredded lettuce drizzled in a sweet sauce hit the spot. Yum! My dinner was the lasagna and for me it was just average, but hearty and I enjoyed it.
Bonus: The property has a pool on the premises and you are welcome to swim before/after lunch.
What Needs Improvement: Better clarification of the food items on the menus would be my recommendation. Il Barolo is still very new and making improvements all the time. Be sure to drop by and give them a try for your favorite Northern Italian classics. The chef/owner visited our table and he is a very nice man, I wish him all the best.
