Sal and Mookie’s NY Pizza and Ice Cream Joint
Why We Went: My boyfriend, Blake, works around the corner at the Blair E Batson Children’s Hospital. After picking him up from a half day at work, we wanted to eat lunch somewhere close by. When I found out Sal and Mookie’s served New York Pizza, I was sold.
What We Had: Choosing what to order was difficult for both of us; Sal and Mookie’s has a huge menu full of items that sound absolutely delicious. After much debate, I finally decided to try their classic New York Pizza and Blake opted for the West End Muffuletta with sweet potato fries.
Something Special: When entering the restaurant, guests can see pizza dough being hand tossed in the kitchen through a large viewing window. It is definitely a nice touch!
Noteworthy: Sal and Mookie’s has an ice cream parlor in the back of their restaurant that is perfect for children as well as adults. In fact, they have been named “best restaurant for families” four years in a row by ‘Parents & Kids Magazine’. With many flavors of ice cream, sundaes, milkshakes, splits, malts, and floats to choose from, their dessert possibilities are endless.
Best Part of the Meal: Although it was no Ray’s (a popular pizza choice in New York City), my pizza was pretty good. The crust was especially flavorful!
Bonus: The bar at Sal and Mookie’s is called the “Pie Lounge” and it is absolutely adorable. They serve regionally crafted beers, custom cocktails, and wine. This is also the designated area for picking up to go orders. Tip: every Wednesday from 5-9:30 all to go orders are 15% off!
What Needs Improvement: The service was a little slow. We expected things to go a little quicker since the lunch rush was over and there were only a few customers in the restaurant.
