Vero Beach, Florida’s dining scene is home to many good restaurants, but few break into the “stellar” category. The oceanfront Citrus Grillhouse sets the standard for a spectacular dining experience: exceptional service, top-quality ingredients, fantastic food, and a beautiful environment.
Hooray for Chef Scott
Celebrity-status Chef Scott, who learned his culinary skills in NYC, delights in his Citrus Grillhouse restaurant, even making time to visit with the customers. From what I observed on my visit to have dinner with my daughter, Peyton, making guests feel appreciated is one way that the Citrus Grillhouse keeps diners coming back for more. A chef with a passion for feeding people, innovative menu, and a professional staff may be the trifecta that results in Citrus Grillhouse being rated as one of the top dining experiences on the Treasure Coast.
Cocktails and Starters
A nice way to begin your experience at Citrus Grillhouse is with a glass of wine, cold beer, or cocktail. They pride themselves on having an affordable and impressive selection to choose from. For our visit, Peyton, and I decided to sit in the Citrus Grillhouse’s dining room for our dinner. Another option is their relaxed and romantic patio that uses the ocean as a backdrop. We ordered cocktails and the generous portion of marinated Olives & Marcona Almonds to snack on. They were so plentiful and full of salty goodness. Our cocktails were perfect.
For an appetizer, we ordered the Beets & Goat Cheese; roasted baby yellow and red beets. Though I am not usually a fan of beets, I could not get enough of this creative concoction. The tangy herbed goat cheese was a wonderful pairing for the acidic beets. They were tossed with a red wine vinaigrette and Marcona almonds and the result was picture perfect. And due to my love for a good salad, I chose the hand-torn mozzarella, pear, and arugula salad, finished with a vanilla-fig balsamic. The flavored vinaigrette dressing was amazing and had a tangy, yet sweet, taste. The sweetness of the pear slices were a nice contrast with the peppery taste of the arugula.
Dinner: Our Citrus Grillhouse Experience Begins
Peyton and I had a hard time selecting our entrees from the Citrus Grillhouse’s menu that was full of intriguing dishes. Chef Scott stopped by our table to tell us about the daily specials; he did an impeccable job of describing them. The couple sitting beside of us overheard his description of the Miyazaki beef and changed their order. After polishing off their first serving of Miyazaki beef, the couple then ordered a second round. Chef Scott sent Peyton and I a sample of the Miyazaki beef * and it was truly the best beef that I have ever eaten.
For dinner, I ordered the Skirt Steak Risotto, with a fabulous truffle “essence” and blistered cherry tomatoes. I am a huge fan of risotto dishes and the Citrus Grillehouse’s was perfect in every way: creamy and rich with the perfect texture. Peyton chose the Filet Mignon with mash puree and haricot vert (fancy word for skinny green beans). The Filet did not stand a chance and it was devoured in minutes. To say that it was delicious would be an understatement.
Impressive Dessert Trio
Though we were overly full, I was not about to miss the Citrus Grillhouse’s Trio of Desserts; pick 3 selections from the menu and Dessert-of-the-Day. Peyton and I chose Key Lime Pie, Cheesecake, and a Chocolate Torte with Ganache for our trio. Oh heavenly day! All three desserts were rich, decadent, and enough to curl your toes. The trio’s portion sizes were tiny, but with rich, quality ingredients, they were the perfect amount. My favorite was the cheesecake; a dessert that I hardly ever enjoy. It was light and fluffy, yet rich and sugary with a hand-made buttery crust. It was nothing short of amazing!
A Truly Wonderful Dining Experience
Our night at the Citrus Grillhouse was exceptional in every way. It is clearly a versatile restaurant as there were guests enjoying date night, a celebration, and family dinner with multiple generations present. Learning about Miyazaki 100% purebred Japanese Wagyu beef was fascinating. I also appreciated the trendy and different shaped serving dishes.
Kobe beef is perceived to be the best beef in the world. However, another Japanese beef favorite, Miyazaki, took top honors in the world steak challenges. Miyazaki beef has gorgeous fat around the edges; it is a sexy piece of meat. It is unlike anything that I have ever tasted, as it literally melts in your mouth like butter. Miyazaki’s myriad of flavor is almost bliss-like. Only 3 restaurants in the state of Florida can purchase Miyazaki beef (due to its limited availability).
