Waldo’s is a laid-back restaurant inside of the historic Driftwood Resort, a Vero Beach, Florida landmark. The Driftwood was opened in the early 1900’s by an eccentric and artistic Vero Beach resident, Waldo Sexton. He influenced many properties throughout the Vero Beach community and they all contain artifacts and kitschy treasures from his personal collection. Waldo’s is no exception. With its outdoor seating, delicious food, and ocean views, it is no wonder why Waldo’s is so popular with both Vero Beach locals and visitors.
Why We Went: My husband, Eddie, and I were treating a snowbird (person who comes South for the winter) friend to lunch. Waldo’s is our go-to restaurant for awesome food and a fun atmosphere.
Something Special: Waldo’s has a fun drink menu and the rum punch is served in a souvenir bucket. You get a lot of interesting looks drinking from it!
Noteworthy: The pasta salad side dish at Waldo’s is very unique. Corkscrew pasta is paired with peppers, onions, plus garbanzo and red kidney beans in a tangy vinaigrette dressing.
Best Part of the Meal: The Travelers Shrimp is always wonderful. The entree is a selection of three types of shrimp: fried (with spicy cocktail sauce), coconut (with apricot preserves), and monterey jack stuffed (with Thai chili sauce). They are all so good that I cannot pick a favorite. The shrimp are accompanied by your choice of sides; I always pick cole slaw and pasta salad.
Bonus: They have live music on the deck.
What Needs Improvement: The service is touch and go at Waldo’s. I have found that getting drink refills takes longer than necessary. On a good note, you get to keep the souvenir cup (which are probably only 8 oz) but the flip side is that I drink about 10 of those so it is very cumbersome for the wait staff. I feel their pain. I would offer pitchers of water for the tables to keep the customers happy.
