COUNTRY #50! 🌍🎉 And my first time in AFRICA! 🇲🇦

Today was a pretty special one. I’ve been itching to hit that 50-country milestone for several years, and Morocco finally made it happen!

Tangier gave us a FULL day—the Kasbah and Medina, Hercules Cave, the beaches where the Mediterranean and Atlantic meet, camels (no ride for me—I try to steer clear of most animal tourism), a feast of Moroccan food, shopping the souks, and even wild pigs at Perdicaris Park. What a way to experience my first taste of Africa!

Tomorrow we move on to Spain for back-to-back new cities and a whole lot more adventure. 🇪🇸✈️

50 countries. That feels pretty darn good. ❤️🌍

After seeing the sloth and watching Indigenous locals cross that little bridge in my last post, we continued on to the Chiriquí Grande region of Panama. 🇵🇦

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend Chiriquí Grande as a tourist destination—it certainly wasn’t touristy when I visited—but it gave us a glimpse into local life and became the starting point for one of my most memorable travel days ever.

My friends Delia and Gary, full-timers in Boquete, negotiated a boat ride that would take us up Man Creek, and somehow a young teenage girl ended up in charge of getting us where we wanted to go. Off we went, loaded with toys, snacks, and little surprises we’d brought for the local children—always one of my favorite parts of visiting Panama.

And then we just watched life unfold.

Cattle lined the creek banks. Women washed clothes in the river. Kids played outside their homes. Puppies seemed to be everywhere. The Ngäbe-Buglé communities we encountered here felt very different from those we had seen around Boquete, particularly in their living conditions.

But it was the children I’ll never forget. ❤️

As our boat approached, they came rushing out to see us and discover what these visiting Americans had brought along. Their excitement absolutely did me in. I was speechless and teary-eyed on the boat ride back.

Travel has a way of doing that. We get to step outside our own little corner of the world and, for a brief moment, see how someone else lives. What matters to them. How simple things can mean the world. What a privilege it is to experience places and people so different from what we know at home.

That day in Panama touched my heart, and all these years later, it still does.
