8 Ways To Experience Elvis In Tupelo
Elvis Aaron Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. He spent the majority of his formative years here, until 1948. Eight years later (1956), Elvis returned to Tupelo to play a sold-out concert at the Mississippi-Alabama State Fair. He was given a key to the city, where his journey began. The most popular way to experience Elvis in Tupelo is by visiting his Birthplace. Admission is required to walk through his birthplace home, childhood church, and museum. All other exhibits are free: the Walk of Life, “Elvis at 13” Statue, “Becoming” Statue, “Elvis’ Early Years” film, Mississippi Blues Trail Marker, Mississippi Country Music Trail Marker, Mississippi Historic Landmark Marker, Elvis Presley Memorial Chapel, Story Wall, Fountain of Life, “Memphis Bound” Car exhibit, and gift shop. Come see the place where it all started.
2. Partake In The Elvis Presley Driving Tour
There are 13 stops along the Elvis Presley Driving Tour, each an influential part of Elvis’ childhood in Tupelo. Stops on the four-mile tour are scattered across town and identified by bronze plaques. Pick up your Elvis Presley Driving Tour map from the Tupelo Convention & Visitors Bureau.
3. See Where Elvis Got His First Guitar
Head to the Tupelo Hardware Company (114 W Main Street) to see where Elvis’ mom, Gladys, bought his first guitar. Stand in the spot where Elvis stood and hear the story of how that fateful day unfolded.
4. Attend The Tupelo Elvis Festival
Held the first weekend in June, this festival celebrates and honors Elvis and the impact that he had on the world. The weekend’s events include concerts, Tribute Artist contests, a pet parade, 5K run, movie poster exhibit, and living history on Main Street.

5. Check Out Elvis’ Car At The Tupelo Automobile Museum
Although car lovers should make visiting the Tupelo Automobile Museum a priority while in town, Elvis fans should stop by, too. The Museum has a collection of Elvis’ movie posters as well as a car that Elvis purchased and gave away. Seeing Elvis’ signature on the check is pretty cool!
6. Walk The Elvis Presley Birthplace Trail
The Elvis Presley Birthplace Trail is a multi-million dollar trail connecting Downtown Tupelo with the Elvis Presley Birthplace. Spend some time walking or biking the trail, taking in Tupelo’s beauty and stopping at the city’s popular sites. Signs are posted throughout Downtown to help guide you around town.
7. Attend Elvis’ Birthday Celebration
Every January, the city of Tupelo celebrates Elvis’ birthday. Plan your visit in January to take part in the celebration!
8. Enjoy The Tupelo Guitar Trail’s Photo Ops
Have your picture taken with an Elvis themed guitar. There are more than 25 steel guitars painted by local schools scattered throughout the city.
