What are Hand Pies?
Hand pies, also known as turnovers, originated in medieval times when the pastry was used as a practical way to carry savory and sweet fillings for lunch. The beauty of hand pies is that they are easy to make, budget-friendly, and can be filled with anything your heart desires. We use canned peaches for our recipe, but you can experiment with different fruits, fresh and canned, such as cherries, apples, or blueberries.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to hand pies fillings.
Make A Tasty Snack Right Now
To make our Tasty Air Fryer Frosted Peach Hand Pies, you only need a few simple ingredients that you might already have in your kitchen: premade pie crusts, canned peach pie filling, and an egg. We will save a ton of time by using a premade frosting. You can use homemade filling and pie crusts, but for the sake of time, we are taking shortcuts that will be insignificant to most.
The air fryer baked method makes the crusts crisp and flaky while keeping the filling warm and gooey.
Peach Hand Pies Ingredients List
- Pre-Made Pie Crusts
- 15 oz. Can Peach Pie Filling (I recommend the Duncan Hines Simply Pie Filling & Topping with no artificial flavors or preservatives)
- 1 Egg
- Icing
- Round Press/Sealer (a 4″ biscuit cutter works as well)
Recipe Instructions
- Roll out the pie crust and use a round press to cut out circles.
- Take a half a spoonful of peach pie filling and place it in the middle of half of your circles. Do not overfill.
- Place the remaining circles on top of the peach topped circles and use the press to mend together, or squish your fork tines over the edges to seal the seams.
- Brush egg wash over each peach pie. (Beat a large egg and 1 Tbsp. of liquid (water, milk, or cream) in a small bowl with a fork until well combined)
- Place pies in the air fryer for 6-8 minutes at 350 degrees.
- Remove pies from air fryer and transfer to a cooling rack.
- Cover or drizzle in icing.
- Serve & enjoy.
A Frosting/Icing Secret
Years ago, I had cafeterias and a huge catering business. At my cafeterias, we made morning pastries, cinnamon rolls, donuts, scones, and so on. We had way too much volume to do these by hand, plus the price points needed to be way less than to make them homemade or hire a pastry chef.
So, I learned a lot from my suppliers. Rich’s Vanilla Bakery Icing for Donuts, Rolls, & Desserts was one of the life-saving products they taught me about, which became a staple in The Pittman Group. Consumers can buy the products, too. Here, a 12-pound pail, stored at room temperature, might last you for months. It is so delicious and can be used in many ways.
There are also flavors available, such as maple, peanut butter, chocolate, and white (such as the cinnamon roll frosting), but this one is a clear glaze.
How to Serve Frosted Hand Pies
When serving Peach Hand Pies, you can get creative in presenting them. Adding a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream can elevate the pastry flavors. A sprinkle of powdered sugar and a few leaves of fresh mint can also add an elegant touch to the hand pies.
If you are going for extra special, you can top the hand pies off with fresh flower petals, and voila, you’ve got a picture-perfect dessert perfect for your Instagram feed. Please note that the pies are just as delicious warm as at room temperature.
Where to Buy Pre-made Hand Pies
Stop by Georgia and try fresh peach hand pies from R&A Orchards in Ellijay if traveling around the southern United States. Or, visit the Fried Pie Company in Texas, which has a range of hand-pie flavors, including a peach cobbler. Regarding ranking, peach hand pies come in at number 12 on the list of famous pies in America.
What Air Fryer to Use
I’m a fan of Fritaire Air Fryer. My Fritaire Self-Cleaning Glass Bowl Air Fryer is the prettiest, stylish, and most advanced brand. Orange perfectly matches our Southwestern NV home decor but comes in sage green, black, and lily white. It looks beautiful sitting on my counter and has a glass bowl.
The Fritaire Air Fryer uses no teflon or plastic (kudos for being BPA-free!), includes a French tumbler and rotisserie, and has preprogrammed buttons for fries, meat, fish, chicken, cake, and fruits. I like that you can see what you are cooking through the glass bowl.
The benefits of using an air fryer are perfect crispiness, evenly cooked food, and healthier than deep-frying.
