Just east of Jackson, Mississippi, is the suburb of Brandon. It’s consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in the state, and where half of the Wherever I May Roam Blog duo (Taylor) lives. Brandon is home to some really great food, too. Here is our list of the best restaurants in Brandon, Mississippi, in no apparent order.
(Updated Jan 2023)
1. The Cleaners by Pizza Shack
First on our best restaurants in Brandon is our favorite–The Cleaners by Pizza Shack. Not only does it serve the best pizza in town, but the menu also includes gyros, salads, and wings, served in a retro two-story space with an awesome second story outdoor patio.
The Cleaners offers two lunch specials for $10 on weekdays from 11 AM to 2 PM: a small one topping pizza with a drink or a gyro with fries and a drink. Plus daily specials, including kids eat free on Tuesday, half price appetizers Wednesday, and 20% off draft beer on Thursday, just to name a few.
Fun Fact: The Cleaners has the first iPourIt self-serve beer wall in the state.
2. Newk’s Eatery
Newk’s Eatery is a staple in Mississippi. They are passionate about delivering flavorful food experiences to their customers and it shows, as it’s easily one of the most popular restaurants in town.
Newk’s quick service menu includes fresh-tossed salads, artisan pizzas, specialty toasted sandwiches, kettle-batch soups, and desserts.
After ordering, head to the Round Table, where you get complimentary condiments for your dishes and their famous breadsticks. The most popular item on the menu is the Newk’s Q, served as a sandwich or pizza. We like the Toasted Adult Grilled Cheese.
Tip: Sign up for Newk’s rewards program.
3. Genna Benna’s
Genna Benna’s is located in the Wierhouse, a century-old building on the square in Brandon. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and friendly staff. Genna Benna’s is a burger joint, steakhouse, and pasta place all rolled into one, with the motto good food, Southern mood.
The best appetizer is Crawfish Empanadas, drizzled with queso and spicy ranch.
We love two of Genna Benna’s pasta dishes: Seafood pasta (shrimp, lobster, sun-dried tomatoes) and the Baked Chicken Parm (which we substitute Alfredo for marinara). Two other tasty and filling dinner choices are the BBQ Shrimp and Grits, and the Stockyards Angus Ribeye.
Popular sides include brown butter mashed potatoes, turnip greens, Mexican street corn salad, green beans, and potato salad.
Come for lunch during weekdays and enjoy a Genna Benna blue plate lunches for $11. They are closed on Mondays.
Tip: After your meal, head next door to their speakeasy, The Gallows Bar.
4. Burgers, Blues, Barbecue
For the best burgers in Brandon, head to Burgers, Blues, Barbecue. This family-friendly quick service restaurant offers great food and a fun atmosphere. B3 (its nickname) serves smash burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads, nachos, and blue plate specials during the week for $12.50.
A few of our favorite dishes include the Dirty Bird (fried or grilled chicken, ham, pepper jack cheese, bacon, and white BBQ sauce), Nashville hot chicken tenders, and Brisket Nachos, messy, but fantastic.
You also can’t go wrong with the pulled pork or smoked chicken plate, with two sides and a roll. B3 has really great French fries (a must!), baked beans, Mac & cheese, garden or potato salad, cole slaw, and steamed broccoli to choose from.
Visit Burgers, Blues, Barbecue Thursday-Saturday for live music and see for yourself why it’s one of the best restaurants in Brandon—with the best fries in the greater Jackson area.
5. Kismet’s Restaurant
Kismet’s Restaurant is delightfully cozy and perfect for families. Although known for their delicious Greek food, Kismet’s also serves sandwiches, Po’Boys, burgers, and a variety of salads.
Essentially, it’s Greek with a Southern flair.
Tasty appetizers that we have had are the Feisty Feta Cheese Spread and Roasted Tomato Hummus. Melody raves about the Chicken Shawarma, loaded with seasoned chicken, onions, and cucumber dressing.
6. El Potrillo Mexican Restaurant
Next on our best restaurants in Brandon is El Portrillo, our current favorite Mexican restaurant. This family-friendly eatery serves all of your favorite Mexican dishes. They have the best queso (cheese dip) in town, and the Mexican burrito is freaking nom.
El Portrillo is the place to be on weekends, as they have live music and karaoke. The restaurant is now closed on Sundays.
Tip: El Portillo offers daily happy hour specials.
7. McAlister’s Deli
McAlister’s Deli is another favorite in Mississippi, with the best sweet tea. The huge quick service menu includes a mix of sandwiches, spuds covered in your favorite toppings, soups, salads, and sides, like potato salad and mac & cheese.
The most popular menu item at McAlister’s is the Choose Two. Combine any half salad, sandwich, spud, shareable, or cup of soup to create your ideal meal. We also love the simple, but good Rotel cheese dip with tortilla chips.
Vegetarians can easily find many menu options at McAlister’s Deli.
Tip: For $6.99 you can buy a tea pass, giving you one tea of your choice every single day for thirty consecutive days. And by the way, McAlister’s is sweet tea done right!
Jake’s is a locally owned restaurant with delicious food and excellent customer service. It’s really just an all around great place. They offer a balance of authentic Cajun and southern Americana recipes, with food specials periodically.
We ate at Jake’s for the first time a few weeks ago, and are anxious to go back! The burgers and fries were off the hook!
9. Lost Pizza Company
Another great spot for pizza in Brandon is Lost Pizza Company. The dough and sauces are made fresh daily, cheese is aged perfectly without the use of preservatives or additives, and produce is sliced fresh every morning.
The Queso Dip, Garlic Bread Sticks, and Fried Ravioli with garlic ranch make great appetizers.
If you aren’t in the mood for pizza, the simple, but yummy Chicken Spaghetti is comfort food heaven. I was surprised to learn that this dish was only 840 calories, considering how delicious it is.
We’ve tried almost all of Lost Pizza’s signature pies. Our standouts are Hector’s Taco Pie (beef, onions, salsa, topped with lettuce and tomatoes), The Hot Chick (ranch-base, grilled chicken, onions, and wing sauce), and The Kujo (meat-lovers with black olives and mushrooms).
If pizza isn’t your thing, Lost Pizza also has wings, pasta, salads, and sandwiches on the menu. They also serve Delta Hot Tamales, a beloved Mississippi favorite, served with crackers and hot sauce.
10. Bonfire Grill
Next on our list of best restaurants in Brandon is Bonfire Grill.
Bonfire Grill is a good place for Japanese and Thai food at affordable prices. From hibachi dinners to sushi rolls, Thai noodles to fried rice, they have it all. There are tables inside for dining in, but majority of Bonfire Grill’s business is carry out.
11. Shaggy’s on the Rez
The Flowood side of Brandon is home to the best seafood restaurant in town–Shaggy’s on the Rez.
Shaggy’s has really fun decor, an island-style atmosphere, and overlooks the Ross Barnett Reservoir. It’s the perfect spot for dinner with friends, family, or even dining solo.
The menu includes a little bit of everything: salads, flatbreads, sandwiches, burgers, tacos, pasta, seafood platters, and an extensive cocktail selection.
Our favorite appetizers are the Beach Balls (fried mashed potatoes stuffed with cheese and bacon, served with ranch and queso) and Seafood Fries (beer-battered fries smothered in lobster cheese sauce, topped with blackened shrimp).
Tip: Shaggy’s is a great place to celebrate special occasions.
12. McClain Resort
Another great restaurant on the Flowood side of Brandon is the Buffet at McClain. The buffet offers a variety of different food daily, but is always prepared fresh and stocked with Southern classics and staples. Expect to find a few main courses, eight or so vegetables and starches, loads of dessert, and bread options.
Melody’s favorite items on the buffet are the collard greens, green beans, peas, sweet potato casserole, Mac and cheese, and cabbage.
Since COVID, the Buffet at McClain concept has changed. You now pay at the beginning, have a server floating around for clearing dishes, but you get your own drinks from a self-serve station.
You can definitely get your Southern food fix here!
Pro Tip: After your meal, explore McClain’s Drive Thru Safari and Petting Zoo Walking Trail.
13. Brandon Donuts and Full Breakfast
This Shell gas-station eatery may surprise you. We go there to Brandon Donuts for breakfast, mostly to bring home, and enjoy the made-to-order breakfast sandwiches, breakfast plates (reasonably priced), kolaches (even boudin), and pastry selection.
They also have sandwiches on the menu, such as BLT, Philly cheesesteak, and California turkey club, plus three kinds of burritos, burgers, and Po’ boys.
Of course, as the name implies, they have donuts, several to choose from. My granddaughter thoroughly approves of this and hasn’t had one yet that she doesn’t like.
Up early? This local spot opens at 4:30 AM.
Bonus: Bop’s Frozen Custard
The best place for dessert in town is Bop’s Frozen Custard. Bop’s makes sundaes, concretes, and shakes, all of which can be customized to your liking.
Fun Fact: Custard is an old-fashioned ice cream treat made with all natural ingredients and no preservatives. It’s served at 26 degrees (compared to regular ice cream at 10 degrees), which allows you to get a “true taste” without freezing your taste buds.
Best Restaurants In Brandon
Brandon doesn’t have a dedicated Italian restaurant or sports bar, so if you’re looking for one of those you may want to check out Flowood, Jackson, or Ridgeland. Some of our favorite restaurants are in these neighboring towns!
