Best Things to Do at Animal Kingdom: My Favorite Rides, Food & Experiences
As a Florida Annual Passholder who visits Walt Disney World often, the best things to do at Animal Kingdom (rides, food, character greetings, shows, and more) may be the park that surprises people the most. Many first-time visitors assume it’s “just a zoo,” but honestly, it’s so much more than that.
Animal Kingdom combines breathtaking landscaping, immersive storytelling, thrilling rides, incredible live entertainment, and real animal encounters into one of Disney’s most beautiful parks.
And let me just say this: the details here are unbelievable.

From the floating mountains of Pandora and the lush jungles of Asia to safari adventures and Broadway-style performances, Animal Kingdom somehow manages to feel both exciting and peaceful at the same time.
It’s also the park where I find myself slowing down more — taking in the scenery, listening to the musicians, and appreciating how stunning everything truly is.

Ride Avatar Flight of Passage
Let’s begin with the headliner attraction: Avatar Flight of Passage.
Even years after opening, this remains one of the most popular rides in all of Walt Disney World — it still completely blows me away every single time I ride it.
This breathtaking 3D flying simulator lets guests soar through Pandora on the back of a banshee, diving over oceans, waterfalls, forests, and glowing landscapes. The visuals, movement, scents, and special effects are incredibly immersive and unlike anything else Disney has created.
And yes, the wait times can still get very long, so I highly recommend using Lightning Lane or heading there first thing in the morning.

Explore Pandora — The World of Avatar
Even if you don’t ride anything, Pandora is worth experiencing.
The bioluminescent plants, floating mountains, waterfalls, and sound effects make this one of the most visually stunning lands Disney has ever built. It feels like stepping onto another planet.

While you’re there, hop aboard Na’vi River Journey, a slow-moving boat ride perfect for younger kids and anyone wanting a relaxing break from the Florida heat. The glowing rainforest scenery and incredible Na’vi Shaman animatronic are absolutely beautiful.
Pandora becomes especially magical at night when the entire area glows.

Go on Kilimanjaro Safaris Early in the Day
Kilimanjaro Safaris is one of those Disney attractions that feels different every time you ride it.
This open-air safari takes guests through the Harambe Wildlife Reserve where you’ll spot giraffes, elephants, rhinos, zebras, wildebeests, hippos, crocodiles, and — if you’re lucky — lions lounging on the rocks.

My biggest tip? Ride early in the morning when temperatures are cooler because the animals tend to be much more active then. Honestly, some safari rides feel like a full-on National Geographic experience. It’s a treat to get the enthusiastic guides.

Brave Expedition Everest
If you love thrill rides, Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain may be the greatest thrill ride in all four Disney parks.

This high-speed coaster races through the Himalayas before encountering the legendary Yeti. There’s a thrilling backwards section that still catches me off guard no matter how many times I ride it.
Between the mountain scenery, detailed queue, sharp drops, and fast turns, this ride absolutely delivers.

Watch Festival of the Lion King
Do not skip Festival of the Lion King. This Broadway-style live performance is one of the best shows in all of Walt Disney World. The singing, dancing, acrobatics, giant puppets, costumes, and audience interaction are phenomenal.
Even if you’re not usually a “show person,” this one is worth making time for.

Snack Around Africa at Harambe Market
Animal Kingdom quietly has some really good food, especially if you venture beyond typical theme park meals.
Harambe Market in the Africa section of the park is one of my favorite quick-service spots thanks to flavorful bowls, grilled meats, and fun international-inspired dishes. They also focus on plant-based menu items and plenty of vegetarian fare.

And if you have a sweet tooth like I do, don’t miss Zuri’s Sweets Shop nearby. Honestly, some of the best desserts and snacks in the entire park are tucked inside this colorful little shop. Think cookies, barks, candies, cupcakes, and way more.

Experience Zootopia: Better Zoogether!
One of Animal Kingdom’s newer family-friendly experiences is Zootopia: Better Zoogether.
This entertaining 3D experience brings the world of Zootopia to life with humor, music, and lovable characters that kids especially adore. While you’re nearby, keep an eye out for Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde character meet-and-greets for adorable photo ops.

Are you considering a Disney cruise? Here are some fun things for adults to enjoy on this high-seas adventure.
Snap Photos of the Tree of Life
The Tree of Life is the heart of Animal Kingdom and one of Disney World’s most iconic landmarks.
Covered with hundreds of intricately carved animals, the massive tree looks beautiful from every angle and changes dramatically throughout the day as lighting shifts.
I probably photograph it every single visit and still find new details each time.

Enjoy a Sit-Down Meal at Yak & Yeti
If you’re looking for one of the best sit-down meals at Animal Kingdom, Yak & Yeti Restaurant consistently delivers.
This Asian-inspired restaurant serves generous portions of flavorful dishes inside a beautifully themed setting filled with artifacts and travel décor. It’s one of my favorite places to cool down, recharge, and enjoy a relaxing meal during a busy park day.
The fried wontons alone are worth ordering, but the egg rolls and pot stickers are a closer runner-up. Favorite meals include the BBQ ribs, Korean beef (wok), and chicken tikka masala.

Final Thoughts on Animal Kingdom
Animal Kingdom feels different from the other Disney parks in the very best way. It’s thrilling without feeling chaotic, educational without being boring, and visually stunning everywhere you look.
Whether you’re soaring on Flight of Passage, spotting giraffes on safari, screaming on Expedition Everest, or wandering the lush pathways beneath the Tree of Life, there’s something incredibly immersive and peaceful about this park.

It’s incredible picture of Tree of Life. We have big bonsai in Vietnam, but never seen this amazing sculpture with a lot of animals like that
Animal Kingdom is a great place but of course seeing things like the living bonsai in Vietnam are unbeatable…the real thing. 😉 Hoping to get to Vietnam in May of 2016! 😉
I didn’t know about this park, but now I want to visit it…
Really? Glad I could introduce you to it. Walt Disney World, in Orlando, Florida, is home to 4 major theme parks: Epcot, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. They are all totally different kinds of parks and equally fun and adventurous. I hope you get to come to Animal Kingdom some day. 😉
That tree at the beginning of your post was amazing. We visited as a family quite a few years ago and enjoyed every minute.
Thanks so much! Maybe you should plan a trip to Disney when you come to visit Vero. I know someone that would go with you. LOL
My last visit to DisneyWorld (besides a business trip during which time I had no time to go to the parks) was just before Animal Kingdom opened. it’s definitely time to go back.
I agree! Shoot for the food and wine in the fall at Epcot. It is epic!
