The first thing you’ll notice about Eureka Springs isn’t the Victorian homes or the quirky downtown. It’s the hills. Roads twist around the mountains, historic homes cling to impossibly steep hillsides, and staircases seem to disappear between colorful buildings. It’s unlike any town I’ve visited, and I’ve explored hundreds across the United States.
Eureka Springs has an eclectic personality that’s equal parts historic, artistic, and just plain fun. One minute you’re sipping coffee in a cozy café, the next you’re wandering through a haunted hotel or watching rescued tigers roam at one of the country’s premier wildlife sanctuaries.
If you’re looking for a destination that’s a little different, this Ozark gem absolutely deserves a spot on your travel list. Here are the best things to do in Eureka Springs.
1. Stay at America’s Most Famous Haunted Hotel
If you’ve ever watched a paranormal television show, chances are you’ve heard of the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa.
Long before I ever visited Eureka Springs, staying here had been on my bucket list. Not only is it one of the Historic Hotels of America, but it’s also widely considered the most haunted hotel in the United States.
Even if ghosts aren’t your thing, it’s worth staying here for the history alone.
Perched high above town, the stately Victorian hotel offers sweeping mountain views and gorgeous architecture. Walking into the lobby feels like stepping back in time, with its massive stone fireplace, comfortable seating areas, and historic charm.
One of my favorite things about the property is simply wandering its hallways. Every corner seems to tell another story. Of course, most guests come hoping for a ghost story.
The hotel offers guided ghost tours throughout the day and evening, and they fill up quickly, so reserve your spot as soon as you arrive. Whether you’re a skeptic or a believer, it’s fascinating to learn about the building’s colorful—and sometimes tragic—past.
I secretly hoped for something supernatural to happen during my overnight stay. Nothing did. Then again, our room happened to sit directly above the infamous Room 218, and the hotel was packed with weddings, families, and visitors. Maybe the spirits simply had the night off.
Our room stayed true to the building’s historic character with vintage furnishings, a comfortable sitting area, plenty of space, and a relaxing soaking tub. Better yet, our private balcony overlooked the outdoor pool and the surrounding Ozark Mountains. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.
Melody’s Tip: Even if you don’t stay overnight, stop by the Crescent Hotel to walk the grounds, enjoy a meal, or join a ghost tour. It’s one of Eureka Springs’ most iconic attractions.
2. Sip Local Craft Beer at Gotahold Brewing
I never pass up an opportunity to try a local brewery, and Gotahold Brewing quickly became one of my favorite stops in Eureka Springs.
The relaxed taproom feels welcoming the moment you walk in, and the outdoor patio is even better when live music is playing. With more than a dozen rotating beers on tap, there’s something for every palate.
My favorite was the Frambois Brut, a fruity sour beer that was light, refreshing, and perfect after walking Eureka Springs’ famously steep streets.
If beer isn’t your thing, stop anyway for the atmosphere. It’s exactly the kind of neighborhood brewery every small town should have.
3. Climb Eureka Springs’ Famous Painted Stairs
One of the most unexpected things I discovered in Eureka Springs wasn’t a museum or restaurant.
It was a staircase. Actually…two of them.
The city’s beautifully painted staircases have become local landmarks and are among the most photographed spots downtown. Besides making fantastic Instagram photos, they somehow make climbing the town’s notoriously steep hills feel just a little more enjoyable.
They’re colorful, whimsical, and perfectly reflect Eureka Springs’ creative personality. You’ll definitely want your camera handy.

4. Visit Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge
If I had to choose one attraction that completely exceeded my expectations, it would be Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge.
This isn’t a zoo. It’s a nationally respected sanctuary dedicated to rescuing abused, neglected, and abandoned big cats and other wildlife.
During my visit, I boarded an open-air tram with a knowledgeable guide who shared each animal’s rescue story as we made our way through the expansive property. Listening to how many of these magnificent animals had been rescued from roadside attractions, private ownership, or unsafe living conditions was both heartbreaking and inspiring.
The refuge provides lifelong care for lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, bears, and several other species that have nowhere else to go.
One resident you’ll definitely remember is Bam Bam, the enormous grizzly bear. Watching him roam his spacious habitat reminded me why organizations like Turpentine Creek are so important.
I’ve visited animal facilities all over the country, and what impressed me most here was the sanctuary’s commitment to education, conservation, and animal welfare. You leave with a much greater appreciation for the work they’re doing—and a better understanding of why wild animals belong in the wild.
Melody’s Tip: Reserve your tram tour in advance, especially during busy travel seasons. It’s the best way to experience the sanctuary and hear the remarkable rescue stories behind many of the animals.
5. Enjoy a Fantastic Mexican Lunch at Amigos
Sometimes the best meals aren’t the ones you’ve planned. They’re the ones that practically call your name as you walk by. That’s exactly what happened when I spotted Amigos Mexican Restaurant & Cantina while exploring downtown.
After parking near the visitor center, I wandered into Amigos and ended up enjoying one of my favorite meals of the trip.
The chicken fajitas arrived sizzling at the table with generous portions of flavorful chicken, grilled vegetables, warm tortillas, and all the traditional fixings. The refried beans were some of the best I’ve had in a long time, and the fresh salsa disappeared embarrassingly fast.
Of course, I couldn’t resist ordering a frozen raspberry margarita served in a cactus-shaped glass. It was every bit as fun as it sounds.

6. Browse the Eclectic Shops Downtown
One of my favorite things about Eureka Springs is that it doesn’t feel like every other tourist town. Instead of chain stores, you’ll find locally owned boutiques, art galleries, vintage shops, bookstores, and specialty stores tucked into historic buildings along winding streets.
Even if shopping isn’t high on your vacation priority list, take time to wander. You never know what you’ll discover.
I especially enjoyed browsing Magpie, The Ladybug Emporium, Nelson’s Eureka Springs, and Granny’s Place, but half the fun is simply popping into whatever catches your eye.
Downtown is also home to Basin Spring Park, where locals and visitors gather to relax, enjoy a cup of coffee, or simply watch the world go by.
7. Stand Beneath the Christ of the Ozarks
One of Eureka Springs’ most recognizable landmarks is impossible to miss.
Standing 67 feet tall atop Magnetic Mountain, Christ of the Ozarks has welcomed visitors since 1966 and remains one of the area’s most visited attractions. Seeing it in person is far more impressive than photographs can capture.
Located on the grounds of The Great Passion Play, the statue is free to visit and offers beautiful views of the surrounding Ozark Mountains.
Whether you’re visiting for spiritual reasons, the history, or simple curiosity, it’s a peaceful stop that belongs on every Eureka Springs itinerary.
8. Admire the Local Art and Murals
Art is everywhere in Eureka Springs. Beyond the painted staircases, colorful murals brighten building walls throughout downtown, adding even more personality to this already creative community.
One of my favorite discoveries was the Art Wall, where historic and contemporary artwork celebrate the town’s culture and history. You’ll also find sculptures, galleries, handcrafted pottery, blown glass, and locally created artwork throughout the historic district.
For a town of its size, Eureka Springs has an incredibly vibrant arts scene.
9. Grab a Coffee at Bean Me Up
I recommend Bean Me Up, a local favorite with cozy indoor seating and a peaceful creekside patio.
Their coffee menu offers everything from classic espresso drinks to frozen creations, but I especially enjoyed the Magnetic Field, a blend of coffee, espresso, honey, and cream that somehow managed to be both comforting and energizing.
Pair your drink with one of the fresh pastries or muffins, find a seat outside, and enjoy a slower pace for a while.
10. Hunt for Hidden Treasures at the Old Sale Barn
If you enjoy antique shopping, make room in your schedule for the Barn Shoppes at the Old Sale Barn, or The Barn Shoppes.
I’ve visited antique malls all over the country, and this one easily ranks among my favorites.
Instead of feeling cluttered or overwhelming, it’s thoughtfully organized with vendor booths filled with everything from vintage glassware and farmhouse décor to collectibles, furniture, artwork, and one-of-a-kind treasures. Even if you don’t buy a thing, it’s a fun place to browse for an hour or two, and it’s a great rainy day activity.
11. Enjoy One of the Best Italian Dinners in Arkansas
If there’s one restaurant I recommend making reservations for, it’s Ermilio’s Italian Home Cooking. This cozy neighborhood favorite has earned a loyal following for good reason.
Dinner begins with warm bread, roasted garlic cloves, and real butter—a simple touch that immediately tells you you’re in for something special. Every bite of my meal was outstanding.
The homemade meatballs were incredibly tender, and pairing fettuccine with half Alfredo and half marinara sauce may have been one of the best decisions I made all weekend. The pesto dishes are equally popular, packed with fresh basil, pine nuts, Parmesan, Romano cheese, and garlic.
And whatever you do…
Save room for dessert. The Italian cream cake alone is worth the reservation.

12. Discover the Story Behind Eureka Springs
Eureka Springs didn’t become famous because of its Victorian architecture. It became famous because of water.
In the late 1800s, people flocked here believing the area’s natural springs possessed healing powers. Hotels, bathhouses, and businesses quickly sprang up around the springs, transforming a rugged mountainside into one of Arkansas’ most popular destinations.
Today, you’ll still find many of those historic buildings beautifully preserved throughout downtown and Basin Spring Park.
One of the best ways to appreciate the town’s fascinating history is simply by walking its streets. Look up often—you’ll notice ornate Victorian details, hidden staircases, colorful murals, and beautifully restored buildings around nearly every corner.
If you enjoy history, architecture, or discovering the stories behind a destination, Eureka Springs won’t disappoint.
13. Explore Eureka Springs on Foot
One thing you’ll quickly discover is that Eureka Springs isn’t a town you simply drive through. It’s meant to be explored. Yes, the hills are steep. Very steep. But slowing down and walking lets you discover tucked-away staircases, hidden gardens, historic buildings, charming courtyards, and scenic overlooks you’d completely miss from the car.
If you enjoy learning about the town’s colorful past, consider joining one of the local walking tours. The Underground Eureka is especially interesting, taking visitors beneath today’s streets to explore remnants of old Eureka Springs.
Comfortable shoes are definitely recommended.
14. Treat Yourself at Ellen’s Patisserie
I’m usually not someone who goes out of my way for sweets. Macarons, however, are another story.
Ellen’s Patisserie is a charming little bakery filled with handcrafted chocolates, pastries, and one of the prettiest displays of French macarons I’ve ever seen.
The selection changes regularly, but I always gravitate toward floral flavors like lavender or rose when I can find them. Pistachio, raspberry, coffee, and passion fruit are also excellent choices.
Even if you leave with just a small box, don’t skip this stop. And yes—the bakery smells every bit as amazing as you’d imagine.

Eureka Springs completely surprised me.
I’ve explored hundreds of small towns across America, but very few have the personality, charm, and originality of this little Ozark mountain community.
It’s quirky without feeling gimmicky. Historic without feeling outdated. Relaxing while still offering plenty to see and do.
One minute you’re wandering the halls of America’s most haunted hotel. The next you’re sipping locally roasted coffee, enjoying handmade pasta, photographing colorful staircases, or learning about rescued tigers that have found a forever home.
That’s the beauty of Eureka Springs.
