Safety Harbor is a little town near Dunedin and Clearwater on the west coast of Florida, not to be confused with the real west coast (California), but that is how we Floridians refer to it. Safety Harbor is small but full of moxie and packs a big punch for such a small place. I recently had the opportunity to dine at their Green Springs Bistro and was so pleasantly surprised at what a little hidden gem this town offered. Romantic, foodie-friendly, and foods with southern flair all hit home with me and I couldn’t wait to share with you. Like the saying “Big things come in small packages”, Safety Harbor is definitely a place you should visit.
Why We Went: We were visiting friends in Dunedin and they left the dinner arrangements up to me. After reading several online restaurant reviews, the phrase “Gulf coast cooking…and then some” caught my eye for a Safety Harbor dining spot. I checked out their gourmet and impressive menu, crammed with offerings I personally love, and made our reservation straight away.
What We Had: The four of us ordered cocktails, wine, and sangria to start with followed by a couple of appetizers, Gumbo soup, and entrees: Sausage, Shrimp, and Grits, Sesame Crusted Mahi-Mahi, Pecan Crusted Chicken Breast, and the Special of the Day, which was a local Florida fish entree.
Something Special: Green Springs Bistro is set up with separate dining rooms plus an outdoor dining venue that is perfect for street views and enjoying Florida’s nice climate. I absolutely loved the decorations, vibrant murals and especially the mod-podge style tables. They even had live musicians; a perfect special touch.
Noteworthy: The warm artichoke spread was rich and gooey, with lots of parmesan cheese, and very palatable. It paired nicely with the wine and sangria, too. The Gumbo’s rich roux with spicy sausage, chicken shreds, and okra over rice was a nice change up from the typical soup choices at other restaurants.
Best Part of the Meal: Literally everything! From the Ham/Red Onion/Artichoke Hearts Beneli (Greek flatbread), the hearty Gumbo and crisp healthy salads, to the gourmet chef-inspired entrees, it was all on a foodies level and far exceeded our expectations. The sesame crusted moist Mahi-Mahi, drizzled with a combination of soy and sriracha, was served with ginger Jasmine rice and roasted vegetables. It was delightful!
Bonus: Definitely order a pitcher of the red sangria. It was smooth and bold in flavor with notes of cinnamon, orange and green apple.
What Needs Improvement: Our service was a tad bit slow, but it was a weekend and we were sitting outside, which I figure slowed them down a bit.
