Dining at The Kennedy in Spartanburg: A Special Luncheon
A trip through Spartanburg on my way to a travel conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina brought myself and a handful of journalists to a remarkable luncheon. The triple threat of having three chefs and restaurants brought into one location, The Kennedy in Spartanburg was a genius move. My travel writer friends and I were happy to reap the benefits or taste the reward.
Gathered at The Kennedy for this special farm-to-fork luncheon were previous South Carolina Chef Ambassador Chef William Cribb and brother/Executive Chef Jamie Cribb, as well as sous chefs Kyle Madison and Jason Dyer, all of The Kennedy. From Cribbs Kitchen on Main was head chef Michael Combs and from Fr8yard, Ryan Cunningham. The team whipped up their famous creations from their respective restaurants using local ingredients, produce, meat, and even flour, to dazzle our taste buds.
While this exact menu cannot be replicated at any one of the restaurants, the food was delicious and will give you an idea of what to order from the three of them.
A Perfect Meal Indeed
We started our luncheon at The Kennedy in Spartanburg with the most amazing cornbread I’ve ever tasted. Not only was the presentation lovely, but the taste was moist and flavorful. The condiments to pair with the cornbread were peach preserves, sorghum syrup, sorghum butter, and jalapeño jam. Oh my, that jalapeño jam was sensational!
We enjoyed lunch family style as we passed around succulent Braised Pork Shanks, tantalizing Grilled B-Liner Snapper Shanks, Roasted Chicken, and Smoked Duck Sausage. The Roasted Chicken with Gravy was my favorite. We shared an assortment of side dishes of local greens and grains, Cherokee candy roasted squash, and warm Purple Potato Salad. Prepared with superior quality ingredients, an exemplary level of cooking skill was present on each dish.
To say that we feasted on our lunch is as much of an understatement as saying that the food was excellent. Every bite I put in my mouth was like a little slice of heaven. I washed my meal down with some fantastic Southern sweet tea.
For dessert, I had a slice of Chess Pie, a classic Southern dish, with sweet potato gelato; not too rich, just right. Little River Coffee was served with dessert.
If this is what Spartanburg is all about, bring me back! What an impression this meal made on me as a newbie to the area.

If you haven’t tried all three of these Spartanburg eateries: The Kennedy, Cribbs Kitchen, and Fr8yard, I recommend finding time to visit as these chefs are fierce! Boy, do they know how to create some darned tasty dishes.
