If you’re looking for a charming small-town Florida getaway with colorful scenery, lake adventures, and a surprisingly vibrant arts scene, Lake Placid, Florida deserves a spot on your radar.
Located in Highlands County in Central Florida, about two hours south of Orlando and just a short drive from Sebring and Avon Park, Lake Placid is a delightful destination known for its beautiful lakes, vibrant murals, and breathtaking caladium fields.
Often called the “Town of Murals”, Lake Placid features more than 40 murals throughout its downtown area, each telling part of the community’s story. But what really sets this town apart is its floral fame.

The Caladium Capital of the World
Lake Placid grows more than 90% of the world’s supply of caladium bulbs, earning it the nickname “Caladium Capital of the World.”
During the summer months, the surrounding farms burst into color as thousands of these stunning plants bloom in large fields that have often been compared to the tulip fields of Holland.
Caladiums—sometimes called “Heart of Jesus Plants” or “Angel Wing Plants”—feature striking heart-shaped leaves in beautiful combinations of green, white, pink, and red.

FYI: If you want to experience the spectacle firsthand, plan your visit during the Caladium Festival, which returns for its 33rd edition July 26–28.
Explore the Shops at Journal Plaza
Downtown Lake Placid is full of personality, and Journal Plaza is one of its best little hubs.
This shopping area is a treasure trove of boutique finds where you can browse everything from unique home décor and thoughtful gifts to fun accessories for your pup (Man and Beast). While you’re there, grab one of the excellent coffee drinks (Owl & Otter Espresso Co) and enjoy the relaxed small-town atmosphere. There are public bathrooms at this public spot, too.

Where to Eat in Lake Placid
You won’t go hungry in Lake Placid.
Start your morning at Morty & Edna’s, a longtime local favorite serving breakfast classics that hit the spot before a day of exploring. My choice? The Morty, a homemade biscuit topped with house made sausage gravy, two eggs (your way), and herb potatoes.

For lunch and craft beer, head to Wet Dogs Brewing, where you can sample a beer flight alongside tasty pub-style dishes.
If you’re craving something a little more elegant, treat yourself to lunch or afternoon tea at the Purple Iris Tea Room, a charming spot that feels like stepping into a storybook. Go for the works with the scones and Devonshire cream, quiche, and finger sandwiches. Bring the kids, too, Purple Iris has a child’s tea tray on the menu.

Get Out on the Water
With nearly 30 lakes in the surrounding area, it’s no surprise that outdoor recreation is a big part of the Lake Placid experience.
One of the best ways to enjoy the scenery is with a guided pontoon boat ride from Lake June Pontoons. These relaxing cruises take you across the sparkling water while pointing out impressive lakefront homes and vacation rentals along the shoreline. You’ll most definitely get your eyes full! Rates are around $300 for a half day rental.

For a laid-back afternoon, head to HL Bishop Park, where you can enjoy open space, a playground, and lovely lake views. It’s a great place to relax, enjoy a picnic lunch, and soak in the peaceful surroundings.

A Perfect Small-Town Florida Escape
Lake Placid is the kind of place where life slows down in the best possible way.
Between its colorful murals, scenic lakes, boutique shopping, and one-of-a-kind caladium fields, this charming town offers a refreshing slice of authentic Florida.
Whether you’re coming for the Caladium Festival, exploring the downtown shops, enjoying afternoon tea, or cruising across the lake on a pontoon boat, Lake Placid proves that some of Florida’s most memorable experiences happen far from the theme parks.
And with Sebring and Avon Park just minutes away, it makes a perfect stop on a Central Florida road trip.

Thanks to Visit Sebring for hosting my familiarization tour, which included the boat ride, breakfast, and afternoon tea. As always, reviews and opinions are 100% mine and unbiased.
