Exploring Downtown Historic Brandon, Mississippi
Brandon, Mississippi is a place I visit frequently because the other half of Wherever I May Roam, Taylor, resides there. I love getting out and exploring when I am in town.
Only 15 minutes from the Magnolia State’s capital of Jackson, Brandon is a growing city that continues to evolve and attract residents. Here is your guide to exploring downtown historic Brandon, Mississippi, a town gaining big city amenities but retaining its charming small-town flair.
Food Hotspots in Brandon
A year ago it was nearly impossible to find anything other than fast food in historic Brandon, Mississippi, so you can imagine how thrilled we are for the tasty new restaurants in the neighborhood. From locally owned coffee shops to upscale dining, you can now satisfy your palate in more ways than one.
One of the newest additions in town is Genna Benna’s, an offering from GB Family Restaurants (Georgia Blue). Combining pizza, pasta, steaks, and gourmet burgers all into one menu, all of the dishes at Genna Benna’s sound delicious.
Munch on Crawfish Empanadas for starters while you admire the renovation of this 100+ year-old general store/jail space. For dinner, you can’t go wrong with the honkin’ big portion of Chicken Parmesan or Seafood Pasta, generously dusted with crabmeat, sautéed shrimp, and sun-dried tomatoes in a white wine cream sauce. Enjoy live music on Friday and Saturday nights at Genna Benna’s starting at 7 PM.
A local mom-and-pop eatery in town is Cafe 042. With a menu that changes daily, you can find Mississippi favorites like Chicken Tetrazzini, Pimento Cheese, and Country Fried Steak here. There are always a few vegetable and side items to choose from, as well as perfectly brewed sweet tea. Check Cafe 042’s Facebook page for daily lunch dishes.
GB Bakery is a full-service restaurant chock full of homemade pastries, sweets, breads, and desserts, plus a large selection of beverages, including shakes, smoothies, soda, iced tea, and orange juice. The bakery serves breakfast, lunch, and brunch.
During breakfast, opt for the GB award-winning Fried Chicken Minis, Breakfast Empanada, or the classic Cathead Biscuit & (sausage) Gravy. All three are lip-smacking good! The Blue Plate Breakfast is a unique option where you pick one bread (biscuit, waffle, or French toast) and pair it with three sides (eggs, grits, sausage, bacon, fruit, ham, hash brown casserole).
Lunch items at GB Bakery rotate Monday through Friday and feature dishes like the Cuban Pizza, Lasagna, and Georgia Blue Red Beans and Rice.
Drinks in Brandon
The Gallows at Genna Benna is Brandon, Mississippi’s first speakeasy. Here, indulge in craft cocktails and tiki drinks prohibition style in a fun setting with great ambiance. My favorite drink is The Wierhouse–GB Bourbon with sweet tea, Crème de Pêche Liqueur, and peach bitters. So tasty! Other popular choices are Old-Fashions, Sours, and Mai Tais.
Be sure to check out the tapas menu with a few light snacks for sharing. To go along with the intrigue of the speakeasy tradition, The Gallows may be hard to find. If you want met to spoil it for you, it is on the side street behind Genna Benna’s about midway down.
Coffee lovers have two choices for a great cup of joe in historic Brandon, Mississippi. The East Brandon Coffee Factory has a super friendly staff with good coffee drinks, especially the White Chocolate Raspberry Latte. Several pastry and muffin options are available at the counter. Weather permitting, enjoy one of the cozy seating areas outside of the shop.
Coffee options at the GB Bakery include espresso, frappes, and cold-brew nitro coffee. My indulgence is the Howlin’ Wulf Nitro with condensed milk over ice.
