When it comes to getting in touch with nature in Vero Beach, the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge is an absolute must-visit. As the nation’s first wildlife refuge, established in 1903 by President Theodore Roosevelt, this sanctuary preserves crucial habitats for over 100 species of birds and wildlife.
Wander through scenic trails, enjoy a guided boat tour to witness pelicans gliding gracefully across the water, or catch glimpses of herons as they wade through mangrove-lined shores. The refuge offers picturesque views and serves as a reminder of our responsibility to protect our planet’s precious ecosystems. Parking is easy and accessible.
Round Island Riverside Park
Round Island Riverside Park provides an idyllic retreat for those who relish peaceful waterfront settings. Here, you can paddle through mangroves (gentle giants) teeming with manatees or simply relax under swaying palm trees on sandy banks.
Nearby Round Island, 7.5 miles south of 17th Street and A1A, offers additional respite with its tranquil beaches perfect for sunbathing or beachcombing. As you stroll along these pristine shores, look for dolphins playing in the waves—a common sight that never fails to enchant visitors.
Both are perfect for kayaking and picnicking. There is also a wheelchair-accessible walkway.
McKee Botanical Garden
Nature enthusiasts will find their haven at McKee Botanical Garden – a paradise created by the talented Waldo Sexton and loaded with exotic flora and fauna spread across 18 acres of lush landscapes. Amble along winding paths shaded by towering palms and marvel at vibrant orchids that thrive amidst tropical foliage.
This garden is a treat for the eyes and a vital conservation site dedicated to preserving endangered plant species. Take advantage of their seasonal exhibitions, often featuring whimsical art installations set against nature’s backdrop. Note the excellent children’s garden, which the local garden clubs help raise funds for.
Discover the wonders of native plants and trees, and revel in the enchanting lily ponds, bamboo forests, and captivating garden art. You’ll also find some rare plants there, like shampoo gingers.
No matter how often I visited, I always found new things to photograph and enjoy. Check out the well-appointed gift shop, too.

On a personal note, even at two years old, our granddaughter loved visiting the ELC, playing with the hands-on displays, participating in the programming, and taking nature hikes. Admission is $10 for ages 12 and up and $5 for children ages 2 to 11.
Royal Palm Pointe
Royal Palm Pointe Park presents yet another delightful opportunity for outdoor recreation combined with scenic vistas of the Indian River Lagoon. Families can savor picnics by the water while children frolic around interactive fountains and splash pad designed just for them!
The park’s piers are ideal for fishing enthusiasts hoping to catch local favorites like snook or redfish during sunrise sessions when fish activity peaks. You are also likely to see dolphins.

A trip down memory lane awaits at Poinsettia Groves Market, where fresh citrus reigns supreme! Indulge your senses amid fragrant groves filled with oranges, grapefruits, honeybells, and more—all picked straight from trees grown right here in Indian River County, known worldwide for producing some of the finest fruits in the nation!
Take some home or order gift baskets that can be shipped anywhere. Try the citrus jellies and marmalades, too. They are so tasty.
Veteran’s Memorial Island Sanctuary
Anyone should appreciate the serene experience of feeding the squirrels at Veteran’s Memorial Island Sanctuary, at 100 Dahlia Lane. This 20-acre park, located on a barrier island off Vero Beach, is a haven for animals, wildlife, and nature lovers. Take a stroll through the beautiful nature trails and observe the native birds, turtles, and gators.
Veteran’s Park also pays beautiful tribute to our military.
The highlight of the park is hand-feeding the fearless squirrels. They are so used to people feeding them that they will come right up to your feet looking for a bite. Bring your peanuts. Please note that it is not pet-friendly.
Peterson Groves
Peterson’s Groves and Nursery is a local citrus farm that offers delicious citrus fruits, including oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes. The farm also sells a unique Honeybell, an extra-juicy citrus fruit that tastes sweet (like a mandarin orange) and sour (like a grapefruit).
The refreshing honeybell is anticipated year-round and is a huge seller in the Indian River. If you are here during the first part of the year, be sure to try one.
Indian River Lagoon
The Indian River Lagoon, nestled between the barrier island and downtown, is a beauty to behold. Here, you can enjoy exciting activities like boating, jet skiing, water skiing, and kayaking.
For those looking for a leisurely stroll or a bike ride, two stunning bridges await you, offering breathtaking views and photo opportunities.
