Festive Chocolate Fudge: A Holiday Favorite
During the holiday season, my family (like many others) will be making family recipes, passed down for generations, to share with our loved ones. This year, my family is hosting a young lady with four children, all of the Latino culture.
Playing on a pun, they have spiced up our life these past few weeks. I thought it would be fun this year to incorporate some of their love for all things Mexican into my recipes so that they are more pleasing to all the palates around my house. #BakeHolidayGoodness is on our list for every day in December.
I am taking my grandmother’s Million Dollar Fudge recipe and changing it up to add a Latino vibe to the finished product, creating Festive Chocolate Fudge. When I was a child, my grandmother always stocked NESTLÉ® CARNATION® Evaporated Milk in her pantry. We used it for macaroni & cheese, hot cocoa, and scrambled eggs, just to name a few. It is no surprise that Carnation evaporated milk is always in my pantry, too. I use it interchangeably with milk when I want more richness and less fat in a dish.
To make the recipe more familiar for my visiting family, I am using a pure vanilla from Madagascar and replacing one tablespoon of coffee-flavored liqueur for the evaporated milk.
Another product that we never skimp on, or buy substitutions for, is NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels. My husband swears by them and keeps them on hand to top ice cream, make cookies, or just to eat a hand full (or two!) whenever he craves chocolate. During this holiday season, I am using NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Holiday Morsels, found at most WalMart Grocery Stores, which are a combination of red, green, and brown chips. They are so pretty! I will save a few handfuls from the package to top the fudge for decoration at the end.
It is always good to encourage children to cook, so I am allowing them to help stir in the holiday morsels and marshmallow creme after the mixture comes off of the stove. I hope to encourage them to want to continue traditions and cook family recipes in their future.
Hints: Be sure to make the Festive Chocolate Fudge on a non-rainy day as the sugar does not tend to dissolve the same as when weather conditions are more formidable. I also let the fudge cool several hours before cutting it. I recommend cutting in 40 pieces, 5 rows on the short side (9 ” side) and 8 across the long side (13# side). For exact cuts, add aluminum foil to the bottom of the pan and butter. Pour the hot fudge mix into the pan with the foil, which will allow it to be lifted out and making the cuts more perfect.
Festive Chocolate Fudge
- 2 sticks butter
- 1 tsp pure vanilla (I used vanilla from Madagascar)
- 4 1/2 cups sugar
- 13 oz jar marshmallow creme
- 1 can Carnation® Evaporated Milk (replace 1 tbsp with coffee flavored liqueur
- 24 oz Nestlé® Toll House Holiday Morsels (or Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels)
- 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
- Butter a 9×13-inch pan.
- Mix sugar, butter, and Carnation® Evaporated Milk in a large, heavy saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Bring mixture to a rolling boil and boil for 8 minutes, stirring constantly.
3. Remove from heat and stir in the Nestlé® Toll House Holiday Morsels until melted and thoroughly combined. Beat in marshmallow creme, walnuts (if using), and vanilla extract. Transfer fudge to the prepared pan and let cool before cutting into squares.
Give this Festive Chocolate Fudge as a gift this holiday season. Buy some disposable pans at your grocery store and make a batch for a friend or neighbor. Cover with plastic wrap, drape with a bow and card and it is ready to deliver. I cannot imagine anyone that would not love a fresh pan of homemade chocolate fudge for a hostess gift, gift exchange, or just because. This rich and creamy fudge will have your family begging for more.
To store: Cut into individual pieces and wrap in small bits of aluminum foil. The Festive Chocolate Fudge will last months in the freezer and tastes wonderful partially frozen, too.
