Fripp Island Resort: The SC Hidden Gem Southerners Don’t Want You to Know About

If you’re searching for a peaceful, crowd-free beach vacation in South Carolina, let me introduce you to one of my favorite discoveries: Fripp Island Resort. Tucked into the state’s beautiful Sea Islands, this private resort-style destination completely surprised me—in the best way.

I recently visited on a multi-generational trip, and for the life of me, I can’t understand why more people don’t know about it. Fripp Island Resort delivers the kind of easy, memory-filled vacation that feels almost all-inclusive, yet still private and personal.

What Makes Fripp Island Resort So Special?

Fripp Island Resort is only accessible if you’re staying there, and that exclusivity is part of its charm. Once you arrive, you can truly stay put for your entire vacation—restaurants, activities, beaches, and amenities are all right there on the island.

The vibe is relaxed, safe, and incredibly well-kept. With no outside traffic and minimal crowds, it feels like a hidden world designed purely for unwinding.

Where to Stay on Fripp Island

Most accommodations on Fripp Island are vacation homes, which makes it perfect for families or groups. You can rent properties for a few days, a week, or even longer, and many of them come with resort access. Contact Fripp Island Resort for more details.

We stayed at 325 Ocean Point Drive, a three-story, four-bedroom, three-bath home with both golf course and water views. It had all the comforts of home, plus a screened porch and back deck that quickly became our favorite hangout spots.

It also slept 12+ people comfortably and was pet-friendly, which meant Dexter got to come along for the adventure. That alone made the trip even more special.

One of the cutest details about Fripp Island Resort is that many homes have names instead of just numbers. Think “Fripp-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” or “It’s Fripp O’Clock Somewhere.” It adds such a fun, whimsical touch to the experience.

Getting Around: Golf Carts Are a Must

You’ll quickly notice that golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation on Fripp Island. While you can drive, having a golf cart makes everything more fun and convenient.

Cruising under the moss-draped trees, past marsh views and coastal homes, is an experience in itself. Plus, it cuts down travel time and lets you really soak in the scenery.

Wildlife is everywhere here, which adds to the magic. We saw dozens of whitetail deer throughout our stay (there are close to 700 on the island), and loggerhead turtles are also part of the island’s ecosystem.

Just a heads up—don’t leave food out on your cart. The deer will absolutely help themselves.

Things to Do on Fripp Island

Fripp Island Resort is one of those places where you can be as active or as relaxed as you want. While some of my crew hit the golf course, I leaned into the experiences that let me learn and explore.

One of our standout activities was a private nature tour. Our guide walked us through the island’s ecosystem, pointing out bird species, mangroves, and even fiddler crabs, while giving us a close-up look at alligators.

It was both educational and fascinating, especially for my granddaughter.

Another highlight was our boat excursion on the 47-foot Big Fripper catamaran. This three-hour trip took us to Morgan Island, often called Monkey Island, where thousands of rhesus monkeys live.

You can’t step onto the island, but the boat gets close enough to see them moving along the shoreline and in the trees. We also spotted dozens of dolphins, which made the experience even more memorable.

Dining at Fripp Island Resort

One of the easiest parts of this trip was food. We didn’t have to leave the island once to enjoy great meals, and that’s a big win in my book.

Bonito Boathouse was my personal favorite, thanks to its incredible sunset views and surprisingly delicious potato skins. Their desserts are also worth saving room for, which is saying something.

OP Bar became our go-to breakfast spot, especially for their hearty breakfast skillet and biscuits and gravy. Meanwhile, the Beach Club offered a more elevated dining experience with excellent service and standout entrees like steak and a massive pork chop that my son-in-law is still talking about.

For something quick and fun, the marina shop is perfect for ice cream, fountain drinks, and souvenirs. They also have essentials like sunscreen and snacks, which is incredibly convenient.

Family-Friendly Activities (and Plenty for Adults, Too)

Fripp Island Resort does an excellent job catering to families without feeling overly busy or commercialized. There’s a full lineup of activities for kids, including Camp Fripp, arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, and even shark dissections.

The Nature Center was a big hit with us, offering hands-on learning with turtles, snakes, and interactive exhibits. My granddaughter could have stayed there all day.

Adults aren’t left out, either. From morning turtle walks and gatorology sessions to trivia nights and seasonal karaoke on the Beach Club Green, there’s always something going on, including two food trucks for pizza and ice cream.

And did I mention there is an adults only pool? The bar area behind it are a real island hotspot during happy hour and sunset.

Beaches, Golf, and That Country Club Feel

Fripp Island Resort offers 3.5 miles of pristine Atlantic coastline, and it’s some of the cleanest, most well-maintained beach I’ve seen. It’s peaceful, never overcrowded, and perfect for long walks or simply relaxing by the water.

Golfers in your group will appreciate the two championship courses, both of which are as scenic as they are challenging. Just be prepared to share the space with wildlife—it’s part of the charm here.

Why Fripp Island Is Worth Visiting

What stood out most to me was how quickly we relaxed. Within hours of arriving, we felt completely at ease, and that feeling stayed with us the entire trip.

There’s no chaos, no loud crowds, and no pressure to constantly be doing something. It’s just a genuinely enjoyable place to spend time with the people you love.

Don’t Skip Beaufort

Before heading home, make time to visit nearby Beaufort, which I do believe you must go through to reach the interstate. This charming Lowcountry town is full of history, waterfront views, and Southern character.

You might even recognize parts of it from films like Forrest Gump and The Prince of Tides, both of which were filmed in the area.
