1. Marvel at Amicalola Falls

The most impressive attraction in Dawsonville is Amicalola Falls, one of Georgia’s premier attractions. Towering at 729 feet, it’s the tallest cascading waterfall in the Southeast. With two viewing platforms, it’s accessible to everyone, providing stunning photo ops and even a refreshing mist on your skin.

If you’re feeling adventurous, tackle the 600-step staircase alongside the falls. It’s a leg workout (ok, I couldn’t walk for days), but the views made every step worthwhile. The falls are part of Amicalola Falls State Park, where you’ll also find charming hiking trails, trout fishing, and the gateway to the Appalachian Trail.

6. Pan for Gold at Crisson Gold Mine

Channel your inner prospector at the Crisson Gold Mine, just a short drive (20 min) in nearby Dahlonega, home of America’s first gold rush, circa 1829. Try your luck panning for gold (it’s a bit tricky) or gemstone mining (it’s super fun!), where you could uncover rubies, topaz, labradorite, or citrine.

It’s a fun and unexpectedly fascinating way to spend an afternoon. You can even have your valuables polished and set (turned into jewelry) by the gemologist on the premises. The price is $15.95 for ages four and up, including gold panning, gem sifting, and a historical mining equipment museum tour. 

Pro Tip: Bring a folding chair for comfort while panning—it’s a relaxing activity that can last hours.

7. Wander the Picturesque Town of Dahlonega

Straight out of a Hallmark movie, Dahlonega’s Town Square is filled with charming cafes, boutiques, and galleries housed in 19th-century buildings. Stop by the Dahlonega General Store for quirky finds and enjoy live music from local musicians as you stroll its tree-lined streets.

8. Explore the Dahlonega Gold Museum

Learn the history of Georgia’s gold rush at the Dahlonega Gold Museum. Housed in a historic building, the exhibits vividly explain how gold changed the area forever. They offer a unique educational experience and a glimpse into life during the gold rush. You’ll leave this site better prepared for future Jeopardy questions. 

The museum is open seven days a week but closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Adult admission is $10, seniors $7.50, and youth ages 6 to 17 $7.

9. Indulge in a Tasty Meal

A foodie haven awaits at Spirits Tavern in downtown Dahlonega. Known for its gourmet burgers and creative twists on American classics, it’s a crowd-pleaser. Try the Augusta burger with white pimento cheese and green tomato chow-chow—you won’t regret it!

You can swap the meat for a veggie, ground turkey, or chicken patty. Roadside peanuts and Trash Pile make great shareable appetizers.
