The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail is 28 miles of paved, multi-use pathways that wind through Gulf State Park. Whether you choose to walk or bike, the trail takes you through nine unique ecosystems, from pine flatwoods and freshwater marshes to coastal dunes and hardwood swamps.
Interpretive signs along the way provide insight into the area’s native plants, wildlife, and natural habitats, making it a scenic and educational experience for families exploring the outdoors together.

Another great spot to get outdoors is the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses Alabama’s last remaining undisturbed coastal habitats. The refuge features four scenic trails, with the Jeff Friend Trail (a one-mile loop) being the most family-friendly. It’s an ideal spot for seeing wildlife, birdwatching, or just enjoying the quiet beauty of nature.
Fun Fact: The name “Bon Secour” comes from the French phrase meaning “safe harbor.”

See Bamahenge, Dinosaurs, Lady in the Lake
The most unique thing to do on a homeschool vacation in Orange Beach is head to Barbar Marina in Elberta (about 30 minutes away). Scattered throughout the property, you will find a collection of larger-than-life sculptures, including Dinosaurs in the Woods, Lady in the Lake, and a full-scale replica of Stonehenge called Bamahenge.
It’s a delightfully quirky destination that sparks curiosity and imagination and is one you truly have to see to believe.

Take A Class At Gulf State Park
Gulf State Park is more than just a beautiful place to explore—it’s also a hub for hands-on learning. The park offers a wide range of educational programs and classes, covering topics like nature appreciation, eco-art, guided hikes and bike rides, storytime, and more.

Relish In Some Free Time At The Track
No trip to Orange Beach is complete without a trip to The Track. With six thrilling go-kart tracks, mini golf, blaster boats, kiddie rides, and more, it’s fun for the whole family.
The Track also owns Fat Daddy’s Arcade in Orange Beach—my family’s favorite spot in town. It features more than 60 classic and interactive arcade games, perfect for some indoor excitement.

When To Visit
Since homeschooling offers the flexibility to travel any time of the year, fall or winter is the ideal time to take an Orange Beach homeschool vacation. During these off-season months, you’ll enjoy a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere with fewer crowds and little to no wait at restaurants. Even better, you’re more likely to score lower lodging prices.
That said, if water activities are a must for your family, consider planning your visit for the fall. Many tour operators reduce hours or close altogether during the colder winter months.
