I had read about the Walnut Hills Restaurant in Southern Living Magazine as well as in the “1,000 Places to See Before You Die” book. They have also been featured on Good Morning America. With a track record like that, I knew I had to try it for myself. Unfortunately, my oldest daughter, Taylor, is not an adventurous eater like I am, so this was not a possible lunch offering for her. Instead, we opted to have dessert at Walnut Hills so that we would not miss it.
Hidden Gem in Vicksburg
Walnut Hills is located in historic Olde Town Vicksburg, Mississippi. They are known for their Southern fare, wide array of vegetables, and luscious desserts. On our visit, Taylor had the Caramel Cake and I tried the Strawberry Cake, which was to die for! I see the strawberry layered cake recipe quite often in the my Southern cooking magazines, but I have never attempted to make it. The strawberry cake was moist and the icing was perfectly sweet. My slice was so big that I ate it on three separate occasions.
All of the cakes and pies at Walnut Hills were homemade, which is something that you do not see every day. There were 15 or more to choose from and all of them sounded and looked amazing. Their classic Hummingbird Cake was the best seller, made with pecans, coconut, and bananas. Taylor and I ordered slices of Red Velvet and Coconut cake to take home for our guys.
Special Offering at Walnut Hills
Our server, Xavier, was the epitome of a Southern gentleman. Taylor and I enjoyed chatting with him, watching his passion about the restaurant shine through. An interesting thing about Walnut Hills is that the staff seemed to know everyone that came in the door. They greeted them professionally, but then took the time to personally visit with them and ask about their lives. When I saw one of the servers shake hands with a local patron and another one hug one, it warmed my heart.
Walnut Hills offered a round table luncheon for $22 per person. It included a drink, dessert, and huge selection of home cooked Southern specialties with side items and main dishes. I would love to have tried this! Walnut Hills served other Southern favorites as well such as Fried Green Tomatoes, Shrimp & Grits, Gumbo, Fried Oysters, Mashed Potatoes, Greens, and Po’boys.
Total Check Before Tip: $32.40
