When I moved to Vero Beach, my family dined at the Kilted Mermaid, in the heart of downtown. The eclectic neighborhood pub immediately intrigued me with kilt-clad waiters, a huge selection of craft beers and wines, and a menu that included both appetizer and dessert fondues. Discovering a restaurant serving top-quality dishes in a funky atmosphere with kitschy decor and trendy music in my new hometown was meant to be. The Kilted Mermaid won my heart at once.
Five years later, I am finally getting around to writing about Kilted Mermaid’s amazing food finds. On one visit, my daughter (Peyton) and I happened upon a packed house, due to a special wine and cheese pairing. We found two bar stools free at the bar, which were the only seats open at all.
The cheese and wine event was hugely popular from the looks of things. We were a bit late to participate in the event, plus I just wanted to have some of Kilted Mermaid’s heavenly fondue for dinner. I do admit that it had my mouth-watering listening to the emcee talk about the characteristics, tastes, and smells of the cheeses and wines. Beside me, two girls were nibbling on the cheese and finishing it off way quicker than the program had called for. I would have fallen into the same temptation rut.

Fondue for Two Please
Peyton and I began our eating adventure at The Kilted Mermaid with Spicy Sausage Fondue. She ordered a glass of cabernet and I chose the Saltwater Passion Pit Passion Fruit Golden Ale seasonal beer. My pour was only about 3/4 full when they ran out so yeah for me, it was on the house, not to mention smooth and tasty!
Our Spicy Sausage Fondue, one of five cheese fondues at the Kilted Mermaid, arrived and we dug right in. It was packed with sausage, chopped tomatoes and peppers, and a pepper jack/smoked gouda cheese mixture. A serving tray of veggies (broccoli, artichokes) bread cubes, and soft pretzel bites accompanied the fondue.
To say that the Kilted Mermaid’s fondue outshines the ones from Melting Pot, a restaurant my daughters and I frequent often, is really saying something. I love Kilted Mermaid’s presentation and dippers, but the fondue alone is really superb. I highly recommend trying it. One $14 fondue pot is enough for two to three people to share. Other noteworthy appetizers are the Dip Trio (both herb and red-pepper hummus and black bean dip) and Duck Empanadas (taleggio cheese and topped with a lingonberry drizzle).
Kilted Mermaid’s Delectable Menu Options
Kilted Mermaid’s menu is one that will really satisfy foodies; if not with the fondue, then with the enormous fresh sandwiches and comfort items such as Chicken Curry Pie, Truffle Mac and Cheese, and upscale entrees like Thai Red Curry Salmon. Peyton and I decided to split a sandwich since we were nearly full from the fondue.
The Kilted Chicken Cheesesteak, filled with tender chunks of chicken, peppers, onions, sliced fontina, and Havarti cheeses, was the dish we picked. All of this goodness was stuffed between a billowy, toasted Ciabatta bun. Sandwiches come with a side salad or homemade potato salad. We picked the potato salad and gave it a thumbs up.
Our sandwich was tangy and incredibly flavorful. Priced at only $12, it was enough food for us to share and a very favorable deal.
The Options Keep Getting Better
Dessert time at Kilted Mermaid may be the favorite time of the evening for most people with the brilliant fondue combinations. Dark Chocolate Rum Raisin and Crunchy Peanut Butter Fondue are two of the five offerings.
I would love to tell you how phenomenal the dessert fondues are, but I’m not a big sweet eater, so I could only speculate. I would say freaking nom, like everything else at Kilted Mermaid. Chocolate fondues come with fresh fruits, cakes, brownies, marshmallows, and occasionally a few surprises. You’ll just have to try it for yourself and tell me about it.
The Kilted Mermaid has open-mic night Wednesdays, trivia on Thursdays, and live music all weekend. You do not need a reservation. Enjoy both indoor or patio dining in a relaxed, cozy atmosphere when the doors open at 5 PM Tuesday through Sunday. I cannot wait to go back!
