Lake Blackshear Resort: Cordele, Georgia

Lake Blackshear Resort: Cordele, Georgia

(UPDATED AUGUST 2022) Situated away from town and tucked in a beautiful Georgia State Park sits Lake Blackshear Resort & Golf Club. It is an hour from Macon and approximately two from Atlanta. This gorgeous property offers a reprieve from ordinary life as you explore time on the lake, fishing, hiking, or enjoying the spectacular scenery. Here is a review of my stay.

Thanks to Lake Blackshear Resort for hosting my overnight accommodations. As always, reviews and opinions are 100% mine and unbiased.

Impressive Accommodations

Lake Blackshear Resort is nestled amid the Georgia Veteran’s Memorial State Park, offering rustic lodging at an affordable price for spacious villas (64 lakeside), lodge rooms, and cottages. Pets are allowed in the villas and cabins for a $75 deposit per stay.

Check-in at Lake Blackshear Resort is quick and straightforward in a welcoming lobby with friendly staff. There are two areas to sit and enjoy conversation or just for a change of scenery. A small gift shop sells soda, cold drinks, snacks, postcards, toiletries, and some grocery items. You are a short drive from town, so we appreciated the convenience of these items, which were reasonably priced for a hotel shop.

I stayed in the villas at Lake Blackshear Resort with my daughter, Peyton, and the central hotel with my husband on another visit. Our comfortable accommodations had a mini-fridge, high-speed internet, complimentary bottled water, a screened-in porch for viewing the serene landscape, and two incredibly comfortable double beds. I can’t say which I preferred, because they were both good options.

I loved the corner space with floor-to-ceiling windows covered with wooden blinds to allow great natural light while working on the chair and ottoman. The room’s color palate was pleasing to the eye and very relaxing.

Lake Blackshear Resort’s Property

Lake Blackshear Resort has pristine grounds lying on the banks of and overlooking its namesake–the 1,800-acre Lake Blackshear, a manmade lake on the Flint River. While the property is appealing and inviting, you won’t want to miss the vibrant sunsets.

Lake Blackshear’s Marina has pontoon boats that can hold up to 12 people for half or full-day rentals or rent paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes. Whatever your outdoor pleasure, they can accommodate it. On my second visit, we were thrilled to rent a pontoon boat for the evening for a quick zip up and down the lake, plus a front-row seat for the stellar sunset.

Lake Blackshear Resort is an incredible recreational attraction and vacation destination in the southern part of the state, surrounded by tall, sweeping pines. The sheer number of pines is so great that I could not control myself from humming Wagon Wheel’s “headed down South to the land of the pines” lyrics repeatedly

Boating and trophy fishing are the most popular attractions at Lake Blackshear, but water skiing, canoeing, swimming, and kayaking are close runner-ups. Lake Blackshear Resort has an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub, and even an outdoor fitness center. A host of seasonal activities, such as guided nature trail hikes, canoe tours, and live musical entertainment, add allure to the upscale resort.

Lake Blackshear Resort has its own year-round golf club, or “Vet’s Course,” as they call it. The four-star Denis Griffiths’-designed course, with golfer-approved challenges throughout the bunkers and mounds, affords players picturesque lake views. They also have a raved about 18-hole Disc golf course. My daughter played it and said it was one of the best she’d ever seen.

Are you into RVing or camping? The campground is primo and look at this beautiful, natural setting.

Lake Blackshear Food

There are three restaurants at the resort. Cordelia’s (open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and 88’s Lakeside Bar are within a few steps of Lake Blackshear Resort. Cypress Grill is just a short drive or walk from the resort. Cypress Grill is a stately, chic restaurant with plenty of space for social distancing and live bands. In the past, several well-known artists, including Atlanta Rhythm Section, Lee Brice, and Zac Brown Band, have performed there.

What’s not to love about Southern food done right? Cordelia’s does it really well. For breakfast, my husband and I had egg dishes, breakfast meats, biscuits & gravy, and pancakes one morning, and thick, stuffed breakfast burritos the next.

We had lunch and dinner at Cordelia’s and loved every bite. It was all truly delicious, from sandwiches to soup to the burrata salad. The best meal we had was the Shrimp & Grits (pictured below), followed by a slice of homemade pie that was the perfect ending to an already perfect day. You can dine in the restaurant, which affords excellent views or sit in the cocktail lounge for a low-key vibe and quick as lightning service.

Cypress Grill at the Marina

Cypress Grill’s menu items have fun names such as the Oops! I Squidded Again, Me and Mahi-McGhee, and Tuna Window Tuna Wall. I found the menu to have very cool creations and upscale ingredients. My lunch choice was the Honey Garlic Shrimp, and my daughter had the Beast of Burden burger. The shrimp came with two side dishes, which I chose White Cheddar Mac and jalapeño coleslaw. Her burger came with one item, which she selected asparagus.

I’m not even exaggerating when I tell you that the Beast of Burden burger was not only picture-perfect and one of the prettiest I’ve ever seen; also, one of the best tasting. The chef uses a mix of elk, boar, bison, and Wagyu beef, which has a terrific taste, then it is smothered in queso, candied bacon, and topped with fried jalapeños. Cypress Grill has hit a home run with this dish!

Things to Do at Lake Blackshear

The 1308-acre Georgia Veteran’s Memorial State Park has a great outdoor museum of military aircraft, jets, tanks, and a B-29A Superfortress. The military vessels range from World War II to current wars. Be sure to pop your head into the indoor museum, too; it’s worth a stop.

Things you can enjoy at the park include biking, fishing, geocaching, boating, and hiking the four miles of nature trails. A unique offering is a ride aboard the SAM Shoreline Railroad, which originally ran between the towns of Savannah (GA) and Montgomery (AL). Today, this 1949 air-conditioned vintage train, “SAM,” takes passengers on a scenic ride from Cordele to Plains, with historical site visits along the way. There are four choices for adventure: History Explorer, Presidential Flyer, Sumter Explorer, and the Plains Express.

The train’s History Explorer caught my eye, which leaves at 9:00 AM and returns at 4:25 PM, with stops in Plains, Americus, and Leslie, Georgia. Tickets range in price from coach seating to Chairman’s Class in the 1925 Pullman car with lunch, snacks, and beverages.

Enjoy your stay and visit to Lake Blackshear Resort and Golf Club at the Georgia Veteran’s Memorial State Park. It is a perfect spot to get away from our current pandemic way of life. There is plenty of space for practicing social distancing measures, and the restaurant and hotel staff led by example on my visit. I hope you will find the immaculate park and welcoming resort as wonderful as we did.
