I admit that even though I only live about two hours away, I was not one bit familiar with the Marriott Pompano Beach or its exact location. When Marriott offered to host my husband and me to come and check out their property, I quickly agreed because I have been a card-toting member of the wonderful Marriott company since 1987. (Yes, I throw that out as often as I can to reinforce my loyalty to the Marriott brand). When I plugged our destination into my phone, I found that Pompano Beach is actually the northern part of Fort Lauderdale, which was a nice surprise.
Welcoming Arrival from the Staff
The evening we arrived at the resort, Florida had been through nothing short of a monsoon all day, so everything was wet and dark; however, when we walked in the entrance of the Marriott, everything became cheery and bright. We opted for valet parking and headed inside to the lobby for check-in. The unassuming inside decor is beach-chic with comfortable furniture and a welcoming vibe. The front desk staff was ultra friendly and provided A+ service. They gave us a brief overview of the property, offered us some games to play since the weather conditions were unfavorable, and sent us on our way to enjoy our executive suite.
Our corner room was located close to the elevators and was absolutely enormous; 495 square feet to be exact. Large windows decorated two of the walls that gave us a fantastic view of the Atlantic Ocean, located only footsteps from our resort. We had a lounge chair and two straight back chairs for enjoying the beach and pool views.
The room was tastefully decorated in subdued tones and handicap accessible. We had a separate living room off to the side with a privacy wall that featured a sitting area with couch and TV. Our king bed had a super comfortable pillow-top mattress and attractive linens.
The marble bathroom in our suite was big enough to hold a small party! As with any hotel, I always like to see what type of bath products they offer and this Marriott offered Thann brand, which was new to me. Great choice! It also had a lighted make-up mirror, a feature that gets a thumbs up from this girl. Our room also had a mini-refrigerator, coffee maker, and robes.
Marriott Pompano Beach was so kind as to send a welcome fruit plate to our room upon reception. These details are the things that put Marriott at the top of my hotel accommodation list, for almost 30 years now, and they are still impressing me.
Special Features and Local Attractions
Marriott Pompano Beach offers a state of the art oceanfront fitness center and onsite spa, Sispa, which I did not have the chance to indulge in. The hotel faces the gorgeous beach and is mere steps to the shore. The outdoor pool was visually impressive and photogenic. Lounge chairs and beach umbrellas were available for use and get this, the pool offers heated towels. Score! The views of the beach are stellar as well as the views of the Pompano Beach Lighthouse. Tall palm trees sway in the breeze.
For Marriott Reward members, this hotel/resort is a CAT 7. It is located nearby to many Fort Lauderdale favorite attractions such as:
- International Swimming Hall of Fame
- The Galleria Mall
- Sawgrass Mills Mall
- Butterfly World
- Isle Casino & Racing at Pompano Park
- South Florida Diving Headquarters
- Las Olas Boulevard/Riverfront (my favorite!)
Dining at the Onsite Restaurants
My husband, Eddie, and I dined at McCoy’s Oceanfront onsite modern restaurant. Unfortunately, it was still too wet from the storm to sit outside by the pools, but we were comfortable at one of the bar area high top tables. Our service was impeccable and our server provided us with great conversation as well. I had the Harlemese Sangria, one of their signature cocktails with Reisling, fresh fruits, and St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur. Though not typically a drinker, at $14 per glass, I expected the sangria to be fantastic, and it was. Eddie ordered his favorite Kamikaze drinks.
Eddie and I started with the Panko-Crusted Deep-Fried Goat Cheese, served with thin garlic toast. It was delicious but could have used more toast points. For dinner, Eddie opted for the Pork Paillard, served over cheddar grits and grilled Swiss chard. It was the first time he had tasted chard and he loved it.
I chose the Short Rib Pappardelle, with wild mushrooms, shallots, parmesan, and a Cabernet reduction. Both dinners were excellent! We could not pass on the yummy dessert options as they all sounded wonderful, so Eddie took the Chocolate Lava Cake to the room for later. Desserts were $10 each but after seeing the detail of the cake slice, I felt it was worth the splurge. He did not leave a crumb so obviously, it was!
Don’t Skip Breakfast
The next morning we were in a hurry to get to the airport but we did have breakfast at the hotel before leaving. Again, the hostess from last night seated us (she was a doll!) and we ate in the dining area of McCoy’s this time. Eddie chose the breakfast buffet and I ordered Eggs Benedict. My meal arrived with the eggs a little more done than they should have been, but the dish was still wonderful. The roasted potatoes were good as well, something I normally just leave sitting on the plate. Eddie had a few choices from the breakfast buffet. Marriott’s buffet does not have numerous food stations but you actually order waffles and eggs to order from your server which is included in the price of the buffet.
Once a Marriott Fan, Always a Marriott Fan
I would definitely stay at this Marriott property again. It is warm and welcoming with the best hospitality I have seen at any Florida property. I would recommend that this Marriott add pay movies to guests’ rooms, as that is something we always partake in, along with usually trying out room service. In summary, we appreciated the hotel’s convenience to the beach, the soft colors of the furnishings inside, ease of check-in, and the impressive service. I cannot wait to return!
