From buzzing urban escapes to scenic small-town charm, Minnesota offers travelers an incredible mix of culture, nature, and unexpected surprises along the mighty Mississippi River. Whether you’re road-tripping through the state or planning a weekend getaway, here are eight unmissable places in Minnesota you won’t want to miss.

1. Mall of America – Bloomington
No Minnesota adventure is complete without a stop at the Mall of America. Located in Bloomington, this mega mall is more than just a shopping destination—it’s an entertainment powerhouse. With 500+ stores, an indoor amusement park, SEA LIFE Aquarium, and endless dining options, it’s a fun stop for all ages. Bonus: There’s no sales tax on clothing in Minnesota!

2. Minnehaha Falls – Minneapolis
Nestled in the heart of the city, Minnehaha Falls is a 53-foot waterfall surrounded by scenic trails and limestone bluffs. The falls are part of Minnehaha Regional Park, where you can walk or bike the trails, grab a bite from seasonal food stands, and enjoy the sound of rushing water.
It’s one of the best urban nature escapes in the Twin Cities.

3. Twin Cities River Rats Water Ski Show – Minneapolis
For a dose of unique, family-friendly fun, catch the high-energy Twin Cities River Rats water ski show on the Mississippi River in Minneapolis. This free summertime performance features stunts, tricks, and choreographed water skiing set to a lively soundtrack.
Bring a blanket or lawn chair and settle in for an unforgettable evening along the riverfront.

4. Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
Snap a selfie with the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. This free outdoor art space is home to over 40 pieces of modern and contemporary art, located adjacent to the Walker Art Center.
It’s a great place to stroll, take in the creative vibe, and appreciate the mix of art and nature.

5. Pottery Museum of Red Wing
Dive into the rich ceramic history of Red Wing, Minnesota, at the Pottery Museum of Red Wing. This charming, free museum showcases more than 6,000 pieces of pottery, stoneware, and dinnerware, including historic Red Wing collectibles.
You’re going to love the two-tone pottery, Eisenhower fun facts, mold graveyard, and the Fiesta likeness of this decade-old brand. It’s a delightful stop for history buffs, collectors, and design lovers alike.

6. National Eagle Center – Wabasha
If you love wildlife, the National Eagle Center in Wabasha is a must. Overlooking the Mississippi River, this interactive museum allows you to get up close with live bald eagles and learn about their habitat, migration, and preservation. The new, expanded center features more educational displays, a stunning observation deck, and offers frequent opportunities for eagle spotting.
Rescues on display at any given time are Angel, Latsch, Hollywood, and Perseus. Don’t miss the views from the second-floor outdoor viewing platform.

7. Minnesota Marine Art Museum – Winona
Prepare to be surprised by the incredible collection of water-themed art at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona. Inside this riverside gem, you’ll find works by masters like Monet and Picasso, alongside local and regional artists. The setting is serene, and the rotating exhibits are always thoughtfully curated. An onsite cafe is soon to open.

8. Garvin Heights Park – Winona
For breathtaking panoramic views of the Mississippi River Valley, head to Garvin Heights Park in Winona. A short drive up the bluff rewards you with a scenic overlook that’s perfect for photos, quiet contemplation, dipping your toes in the Mighty Miss, or watching the sunset. It’s a peaceful escape that captures the beauty of southeastern Minnesota.
Note: The Mississippi River is one of the world’s longest rivers.

- AmericInn by Wyndham – Winona: Comfortable and welcoming with all the essentials, this was a great base for exploring Winona and the surrounding region.
- AC Hotel Bloomington Mall of America: Sleek, stylish, and within walking distance to the Mall of America—a great choice if you want comfort and convenience near the action. Bonus: a European-inspired, complimentary gourmet breakfast.

Noteworthy Meals and Snacks
- Borough (Minneapolis): Don’t miss the deviled eggs, squash tartine, or the exceptional bread service.
- Hanisch Bakery and Coffee Shop (Red Wing): Delicious pastries and cozy vibes.
- Mandy’s Coffee and Cafe (Red Wing): The dirty iced matcha was a refreshing pick-me-up.
- Bloedow Bakery (Winona): Their maple long john was out of this world. This classic bakery is a must-stop for fresh pastries.
- Herb + Arrow (Wabasha): A standout lunch spot with creative dishes. I loved the chicken quinoa bowl, the only quinoa dish I’ve ever had that had flavor. LOL
- Signatures Restaurant (Winona): Elegant dining with a side of storytelling—ask about the collectibles decorating the space!
