Starboard Market
Thank the stars. I got to experience Starboard Market. The timing was perfect, and I landed there during their lunchtime hours. What a treat it was!
The Reuben sandwich was a 10/10—fantastic, a true testament to the quality of their food. And if you have a sweet tooth, their dessert bars and fruit pastries are a must-try. I couldn’t resist devouring the dessert bar and the creamy strawberry pastry right after my sandwich.
It’s desserts at their finest, comparable to those you’d find in NYC. You have to eat here.
K&B Emporium
K&B Emporium is a delightful eatery located within a larger building that also houses a retail space and another restaurant upstairs. The eatery serves delicious food, including gourmet grab-and-go items and groceries, perfect for those with a busy lifestyle who still want to enjoy high-quality food.
Choose from lunch items like sandwiches and soups, or indulge in sweet treats such as pastries, cupcakes, cookies, smoothies, and ice cream.
Ge Jo’s by the Lake
Ge Jo’s by the Lake is an Italian Restaurant & Lounge situated in a prime spot right in front of Clear Lake. Known for their hand-tossed pizzas, I opted for their Italian Grinder sandwich, a local favorite that packs a powerful punch. The bread was billowy and stuffed with flavorful meat, topped with melted cheese.
I highly recommend the Garlic Cheese Bread, a must-order starter. Be sure to try it with their hot oil dip.
Bennigan’s
Bennigan’s, an Irish-pub-style chain, is famous for its Monte Cristo sandwiches, broccoli bites, and Death by Chocolate dessert. Their extensive menu includes everything from gourmet salads and steaks to dinner entrees and appetizers.
Don’t overlook Bennigan’s mouth-watering burgers, which are juicy and delicious. It is also a great spot for after-work cocktails, watching sports, or hanging out with friends.
South Shore Donut Co.
South Shore Donut Co. is an adorable shop in Cleark Lake known for its fantastic pastries, baked cake donuts, and light lunch fare, like hot dogs, chicken salad, and burgers. South Shore’s creative flavors, like C is for Cookies, Strawberry Fields, and Go Shorty It’s Your Birthday, are impressive.
Do yourself a favor and try Sweet Caroline, topped with maple buttercream, bacon pieces, and a maple syrup drizzle. Donuts come in regular and mini sizes.
Cabin Coffee Co.
A good coffee shop makes any visit more enjoyable, and Cabin Coffee Co. in Clear Lake doesn’t disappoint. This flagship store has expanded to other locations, but the original remains a favorite.
Come for the excellent coffee and espresso, and stay for the pastries, sandwiches, and bagels. It’s the perfect spot to start your day or take a midday break.
Half Moon Inn
My friends Ann and Steve of Postcard Jar recommended Half Moon Inn, which did not disappoint.
“This little joint feels like a classic steakhouse straight from the 1970s. From the outside, it might not look like much, but step inside, and you’ll find locals enjoying great steaks, well-prepared monkfish, and delicious cocktails. It’s a hidden gem that you’ll remember.”
Lake Time Brewery
Lake Time Brewery is a craft beer lover’s dream. Known for its sensational brews, eye-catching artwork, and a mantra to cherish life’s simple pleasures, this brewery offers some of the best beers in Iowa.
My favorites are Peanut Butter Porter and One Tough Cookie oatmeal stout—delicious and smooth. While it’s not a restaurant, their beers are so flavorful they almost feel like dessert. Don’t miss out on this gem!
Cookies, Etc.
According to my friend Sara from Travel with Sara, Cookies, Etc. is North Iowa’s best cookie spot. Their monster cookies, oatmeal raisin, and classic chocolate chip are crowd favorites. Whether grabbing a quick snack or taking some cookies, this place is a must-visit for all cookie lovers.
