What To Do in Jensen Beach, Stuart, and Hobe Sound, Florida
Martin County, Florida is the area that encompasses the areas of Stuart, Jupiter and Hutchinson Islands, Port Salerno, Sewall’s Point, Jensen Beach, and Hobe Sound. It oozes old Florida charm, but modern conveniences and attractions, too. The ecotourism scene in Martin County is a force to be reckoned with, and maybe one of the top regions in the Sunshine State for enjoying the outdoors. Here’s what to see and do in Jensen Beach, Stuart, and Hobe Sound, a really fun part of Florida.
Take a Guided Boat Tour (Stuart)
Hop on your personal power catamaran (two can ride), affix your headset, and follow your Captain (riding ahead of you in his catamaran) as you learn about the St. Lucie waterways. Riding the Waves Treasure Coast introduces you to beautiful nature via an ecotour of the St. Lucie River. It’s a great way to take in the spectacular scenery, plus get an educational look at the diverse Florida landscape. You may even see dolphins and manatees on your journey.
Explore Jonathan Dickinson State Park (Hobe Sound)
Surrounding the Loxahatchee River is the Jonathan Dickinson State Park. This park, in Hobe Sound, is dotted with scrub pine, flatwoods, mangroves, and swamps. People visit this majestic natural wonderland for biking, horseback riding, hiking, canoeing, boating, freshwater fishing, and camping. There are two full-facility campgrounds as well as a primitive one. While you are at the state park, visit Trapper Nelson’s homestead, a 1930’s pioneer.
Visit the House of Refuge at Gilbert’s Bar (Stuart)
Visit the only remaining House of Refuge in the state of Florida. This was one of ten built along Florida’s East coast for dramatic sea rescues over the course of 120 years. House of Refuge, the oldest structure in Martin County, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Admire the Mansion at Tuckahoe (Jensen Beach)
Previously owned by a Coca-Cola heiress, the Mansion at Tuckahoe is a beautiful site. This Mediterranean Revival home was once the host to a plethora of parties attended by the elite as well as WWII soldiers from Camp Murphy. While you can only admire the home from the outside, it is worth a stop and definitely Instagram-worthy.
Explore Downtown Stuart
Known as the “Sailfish capital of the world“, Stuart is adorable little town situated in Martin County, Florida. Dine in one of the amazing restaurants, shop in local boutiques, or enjoy a show at the Lyric Theatre, built in 1926 and considered a landmark. This little treasure also has high-end art galleries, antique shops, and museums.
Fun Fact: The Lyric Theatre began as a silent movie house.
Take Photographs at Blowing Rocks Preserve (Hobe Sound)
Found on Jupiter Island (though truly Hobe Sound), is the Blowing Rocks Preserve, a cool outcropping of Anasthasia limestone that sprays plumes of water through the holes created by erosion. The result–phenomenal pictures and a really unique natural attraction. The sprays can reach 50 feeet! Surrounding the preserve are hammocks, mangroves, and beach dunes. An educational center (Hawley Education Center) offers info about the property. A boardwalk and plant nursery add a second dimension to your visit.
Tour a World-Class Museum (Stuart)
Talk about a shocker, you’ll be blown away when you enter the doors of the Elliott Museum. This museum is not only gorgeous, but very well organized and chock full of fun things to see. With exhibits range from temporary (Chinese kites) to a huge collection of baseball memorabilia, there was much to take in at the Elliott Museum.
Perhaps the most impressive part of the museum is the display of vintage automobiles, boats, and bicycles. A three story glass structure held well over 100 cars, which could be “ordered” and brought to the front and center of the display area. Here, a museum docent explain thse key features of the automobiles and answers questions. What a cool concept!
Swim at Bathtub Reef Beach (Stuart)
Located on Hutchinson Island, you will truly feel like you are driving through the Hollywood Hills or something and not on the East coast of Florida as you make your way to Bathtub Reef Beach. During low tide, take a swim in ths crystal-clear water that is warmed to, you guessed it, bathtub temps by the sun’s rays. My favorite part comes later in the day when the breaking surf beats the rock formations. This is definitely an Instagram-worthy stop.
