On a visit with my daughter, we discovered just how much this lively river city has to offer. From incredible meals and exciting museums to unforgettable hotels and unique neighborhoods, here are 12 fun things to do in Louisville, KY that will make your trip memorable.
1. Tour the Kentucky Derby Museum & Churchill Downs
No trip to Louisville is complete without exploring the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs, home of the iconic Kentucky Derby, at which around 160,000 guests attend. Your admission includes interactive exhibits, a 360-degree film experience, and access to Riders Up, a race simulator. Walk through the Wall of Winners, view vintage Derby fashion, and grab a bite at the on-site Derby Café.
Fun fact: Besides the Derby, Churchill Downs runs nearly 17 other races on the same day! You can also learn more about Kentucky’s equestrian claim at the Kentucky Horse Park.
2. Visit the Louisville Zoo
Home to more than 1,700 animals across 134 acres, the Louisville Zoo is a must-visit for families and animal lovers. Don’t miss Glacier Run (truly one of the best zoo exhibits in the country — with seals, sea lions, and grizzly bears), Lorikeet Landing, and the HerpAquarium (learn about chameleons, snakes, and gators).
You’ll see polar bears, Gila monsters, Asian elephants, and more while supporting conservation and education.
3. Explore the NuLu District
NuLu (New Louisville) is the city’s trendy arts and shopping district. Pop into shops like Six Sisters Boutique and Revelry Boutique + Gallery, then enjoy a meal at Royal’s Hot Chicken. This open-faced turkey sandwich, topped with Mornay sauce, tomato slices, and crispy bacon, is a must-try. I can’t even look at the photo without getting a drool-worthy reaction!
5. Snap a Selfie at Iconic Spots
Louisville offers many great photo opportunities! Take pics with the giant baseball bat at the Louisville Slugger Museum, the 30-foot-tall golden David statue (Michelangelo replica) at 21c Museum Hotel, the Wall Street of Whiskey mural, and the Jennifer Lawrence mural downtown.
And the Louisville Slugger baseball bat, standing 120 feet tall and weighing 68,000 pounds, can’t be missed at the Slugger Museum..

This peaceful Midwest destination is a favorite among Louisville travelers seeking a leisurely road trip filled with charm and character.

6. Enjoy Breakfast at Wild Eggs
Start your day with a hearty breakfast at Wild Eggs, with five locations in Louisville. Try the Chocolate Chip Pancakes or the Mr. Potato Head Casserole, loaded with veggies, hash browns, and eggs. New on the menu is breakfast lasagna; be still my beating heart. The sweet tea is delicious, too.
7. Learn at the Frazier History and Other Nearby Museums
The Frazier History Museum hosts dynamic exhibits, from The Hunger Games and Lewis & Clark to Prohibition-era displays. Nearby, visit the Louisville Slugger Museum to learn about the iconic Louisville treasure and the Muhammad Ali Center to dive deeper into the famous boxer and philanthropist’s career and legacy.
8. Grab Lunch at Mussel & Burger Bar
This hip American bistro, Mussel & Burger Bar, offers gourmet burgers and next-level mac & cheese. Try the Southern Bell Burger, featuring fried green tomatoes and pimento cheese, or indulge in the Four Cheese Mac with bacon and a brown butter crumble.
9. Discover the Louisville Mega Cavern
Go underground at the Louisville Mega Cavern, a one-of-a-kind attraction with zip lines, e-bike tours, and a tram ride through 17 miles of caverns. It’s both thrilling and educational!

Take a relaxing evening aboard the Belle of Louisville or the Mary M. Miller historic steamboats.
