1. Boyertown: Classic Cars, Candy, and Cool Trains

Boyertown is packed with quirky and memorable attractions that make it a must-stop in Berks County. Start at the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles, where car enthusiasts can explore a wide range of classic automobiles and vintage treasures.

Don’t miss the carriages in the barn out back–they are extraordinary and possibly the most valuable piece in the collection!

Those with a sweet tooth won’t want to miss The Peppermint Twist Candy and Ice Cream Shop—the chocolate egg cream here is absolutely divine. You’ll also find homemade fudge, retro candies, and even a vintage pinball machine in this adorable shop with a strong sense of community.

For train lovers or those with an affinity for goth, the Colebrooksdale Railroad is a must. Splurge on the gorgeous parlor car for an extra-special ride along this Victorian-looking line.

I’ve been on many passenger trains like this around the country, and Colebrooksdale is by far the most beautiful.

History buffs will also appreciate the General Carl Spaatz National USAAF Museum, which highlights the legacy of America’s first five-star general in the U.S. Air Force. They’ve done a remarkable job of creating exhibits that draw you in and immerse you in the experience.

I also enjoyed and appreciated the military uniforms and thought-provoking displays.

2. Reading: Art, Pizza, and Baseball Fun

Reading offers a lively mix of culture, food, and entertainment. Grab a slice at Russo’s Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant, a local favorite for its authentic Italian pies. I went off the grid to enjoy a slice of Philly cheesesteak and buffalo chicken on two occasions, so definitely think outside the usual pizza box at this spot.

Then head to Reading’s Pagoda for a quick sightseeing stop—it’s currently under construction, but it’s still an iconic landmark worth seeing.

For a creative twist, explore GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, a massive art gallery and community center where you can browse exhibits, take a hands-on class, and shop for one-of-a-kind merchandise.

Sports fans and families will definitely want to catch a Reading Fightin Phils (minor league Phillies team) game at the savvy FirstEnergy Stadium. From iconic eats to the super cool Taylor Swift dedication wall, not to mention really great baseball, this is an A+ stop for all.

3. West Reading: Murals, Shopping, and Mochi Donuts

West Reading is perfect for a leisurely stroll. The Cherry Street Mural Corridor (now known as Dean’s Way, in honor of its founder) features over 30 murals across three blocks.

Take in the stunning street art, stop by local shops (DeLune and Betula’s Botanica Bath Body & Apothecary really caught my attention), and treat yourself to a mochi donut or other sweet snack.

Beautifully landscaped streets make wandering here a delight, and the neighborhood’s charm is perfect for an afternoon of exploration. And bonus, there are many tasty dining and drinking options along Penn Avenue.

Overnight in Reading

For those wishing to extend their stay, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Reading offers excellent lodging. From a comfortable and clean room to a gorgeous lobby, friendly staff, and hoppin’ onsite restaurant, the price is right at this property.

Pro Tip: Try the food, dessert, and drinks. The onsite restaurant is top-notch. I was thankful for the crème brûlée of the day.

Bonus: Daniel Boone Homestead

Just a short drive east of these towns, the Daniel Boone Homestead marks the 18th-century birthplace of the legendary frontiersman. History lovers will enjoy exploring the historic house, grounds, and exhibits that bring early American life to life.

And if you’re a big Daniel Boone fan, be sure to stop in the West Virginia Cultural Center at the WV State Capitol if you’re ever passing through. There is a great exhibit and many of his original guns.
