Years ago, I took a Mediterranean cruise that included the iconic Amalfi Coast. With private guides and unforgettable views, it felt unbeatable. But during a more recent cruise aboard Costa Toscana with my daughter Taylor, we discovered two lesser-known towns that truly surprised us — Finalborgo and Noli, which are not part of the Amalfi Coast, but Finale Ligure, in the Liguria region near Savona.

We booked an excursion from the Savona port and were immediately impressed — minimal traffic, stunning scenery, and a comfortable drive along quiet roads. First stop: Finalborgo.

A Refreshing Coastal Discovery
While the Amalfi Coast is Italy’s most iconic seaside destination, a recent cruise with my daughter and business partner, Taylor, introduced us to two coastal towns that completely won us over: Finalborgo and Noli. These charming villages on the Finale Ligure offer stunning views, rich history, and a crowd-free experience — all at a fraction of the cost.
Excursion Cost: €45 per person through Costa Cruises

Finalborgo: A Fairytale Town Near the Sea
Tucked away just minutes from the Ligurian coast, Finalborgo is a beautifully preserved medieval village. Its cobblestone streets, historic gates, and Renaissance buildings create a peaceful and picturesque old-world atmosphere.

Highlights of Finalborgo:
- Porta Reale: Iconic entrance gate with a coat of arms
- St. Biagio’s Basilica: 17th-century church with a slightly leaning bell tower, sparkling chandeliers, and an impressive pipe organ
- Cavassola and Court Palaces: Great for architecture buffs
- Charming cafés & flower-adorned streets: A perfect place to relax and soak in the local vibe
Pro Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes to explore the winding alleys.

Noli: Beachside Charm Meets Medieval Majesty
Just a short drive from Finalborgo, Noli offers the perfect blend of history and coastal relaxation. This former maritime republic has beautiful Bandiera Blu beaches, palm-lined promenades, and a maze of colorful streets to wander.

Why We Loved It More Than Amalfi
- Clean, uncrowded beaches: Great for swimming, sunbathing, or enjoying a coffee steps from the sea
- Seaside cafés: Grab a drink with your toes practically in the sand
- Medieval town center: Painted doors, narrow alleys, and artisan shops
- Historic gems: San Paragorio Cathedral, Castle of Monte Ursino, and quaint fishing stalls selling fresh local catch
Fun Fact: Noli still operates small fishing boats — offering seasonal fresh fish like squid, tuna, and skipjack.

More Than Just Pretty Views
While the Amalfi Coast is known for its dramatic scenery, Finalborgo and Noli gave us something more — authenticity, history, and a genuine connection with Italian culture.

We wandered through quiet streets, shopped for silk scarves and leather goods, and indulged in cheese focaccia and perfect cannoli. Taylor still raves about the focaccia, and I can’t stop dreaming about the pastries and coffee.
Pro Tip: End your day with a decadent waffle sundae at Bar Centrale Grosso.

Final Thoughts
If you’re cruising through northern Italy or simply looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination, Finalborgo and Noli deserve a spot on your itinerary. They’re relaxed, authentic, and wonderful — everything we didn’t know we were missing on the Amalfi Coast.
