My recent Mississippi River Country FAM (blogger familiarization) trip took me along three scenic sections of the river through Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. While Wisconsin was the briefest stretch, it left a lasting impression, especially in Madison, the vibrant, lakefront state capital that effortlessly blends history, nature, and college-town energy. Though I’ve previously explored Janesville and Milwaukee, this was my first real look and introduction to Madison, Wisconsin, and it absolutely delivered.
Here’s what to love about this charming, walkable city and why it deserves a spot on your Midwest road trip itinerary.

Explore the Beautiful Wisconsin State Capitol
You can’t visit Madison without touring the Wisconsin State Capitol—inside and out. The majestic dome and marble interiors make it one of the most beautiful state capitol buildings in the country. Even if politics isn’t your thing, the architecture, public art, and panoramic city views from the observation deck are worth your time.

Bonus? Our hotel, the Best Western Premier Park Hotel, sat directly across the street from the Capitol—offering unbeatable views from our 9th-floor suite. The hotel surprised me with its upscale vibe, stylish common areas, and amenities like complimentary Wi-Fi, 50-inch flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and mini-fridges.

Stroll the University of Wisconsin Campus
A short walk from the Capitol brings you to the picturesque University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, where student life and lake life blend beautifully. We spent time soaking up the sun on the lakefront near the Memorial Union Terrace, a vibrant gathering place featuring outdoor seating, waterfront activities, and an infectious energy.

It felt like a community in motion—families playing games, students lounging with friends, and others enjoying food, beer, or just a peaceful moment by the lake. Naturally, we joined the locals with a scoop of creamy ice cream from the Daily Scoop inside the Memorial Union (a must-try!).
Try the orange cream chocolate chip. Mmm, mmm, good.

Fun fact: We love exploring college campus towns. State College (PA State University) and College Station (Texas A&M University) are a few you might enjoy if this is your jam.

Savor Farm-to-Table Dining at Graze
Dinner in Madison was a highlight, thanks to Graze, an award-winning restaurant from James Beard winner Chef Tory Miller. Set in a glass-fronted space with striking views of the Capitol, Graze offers locally sourced comfort food with a twist—blending Chef Tory’s Wisconsin roots and Korean heritage.
If you go, start with the Bread & Spread appetizer—pillowy milk bread rolls served with chèvre, ramp pesto, and pistachio dip. For my entrée, I chose the delicious pasta with whipped ricotta, basil pesto, and pecorino Romano; however, the famed Graze Burger was a close second. Dessert? Don’t miss the Basque cake with sour cream ice cream and cherry compote.
Reservations are recommended—and you’ll quickly see why.

Stop into Fromagination – A Cheese Lover’s Dream
With Wisconsin known as the cheese capital of the U.S., we couldn’t skip a stop at Fromagination, one of the country’s top artisan cheese shops. Located right off Capitol Square, it’s a one-of-a-kind boutique with regional cheeses, curated gifts, and lots of tasting opportunities.
Whether you’re a casual snacker or a true cheese connoisseur, Fromagination is a must for foodie travelers.

Final Thoughts: Madison Left Me Wanting More
Our short-day and overnight in Madison was too short—but incredibly sweet. From lakeside lounging and gourmet eats to a stunning state capitol and local cheese scene, Madison combines small-town friendliness with big-city flavor.
