Nevada’s capital city may be small in size, but it’s big on history, character, and fun. Carson City blends Old West roots with cultural gems, outdoor adventures, and a vibrant dining scene, making it a fantastic getaway. Here are the top things you won’t want to miss when visiting Carson City.

Take a Ghost Tour at the Nevada State Prison
Step inside history with a side of spooky. The Nevada State Prison (open for 150 years) paranormal ghost walk is one of Carson City’s most unique experiences, offering an eerie peek into its past. During my tour, we had stars from Ghost Hunters TV shows and return visitors who shared creepy experiences and photos from their previous tours.

Flashlights and closed-toe shoes (no jeans) are required for this fun but hair-raising tour through the country’s 4th-oldest prison, which has an arsenal of creepy and bizarre happenings. The creature at the end of the hallway was the most frightening of all. I’ll save all the details for you to learn firsthand on your tour.

If you’re into prison tours, West Virginia has another fantastic one.
Ride the V&T Railway to Virginia City
Hop aboard the historic Virginia & Truckee (V&T) Railway for a scenic ride and fun experience, easily one of the top things to do in Carson City. The views are jaw-dropping, and the photo ops are endless. There are a few options to choose from, but I recommend the Virginia City 1/2-day adventure that leaves you in town for about 3 1/2 hours on your own before making the trek back to Carson City.

This train offers unassigned seating, and bottled water is available for purchase onboard. Having taken many train rides around the country, I thought the scenic route was one of the best, and you see quite a few remaining old-school silver mines, of which I learned that only about 10 were prosperous, and most others were a Ponzi scheme.

Again, West Virginia is another great vacation choice with several train ride options. Read more about the Potomac Eagle and Cass Scenic Railroad in this blog post.
Play at the Casinos
This is Nevada, after all, so rightfully so that gambling should be one of the top things to do in Carson City. Try your luck at the casinos, with Casino Fandango standing out as a local favorite for both gaming and entertainment. Regardless of how much money you are spending, be sure to sign up for the casino rewards card.

My husband and I quickly earned a substantial amount of free play dollars and even received a casino comp for a meal, which was really good. The casino is clean, features state-of-the-art, latest slots, and I was fascinated by the “rain storm” that occurs at one of the bar areas.

Tour the Nevada State Capitol
Learn about Nevada’s political history inside the beautiful Nevada State Capitol building. It’s a quick stop that packs in plenty of state pride and historic charm. It is not the most fascinating or beautiful, but it is still worth a look.
Fun facts about this state capitol are that it was constructed from native sandstone and Alaskan marble, features a gorgeous silver dome, and is the second-oldest capitol building west of the Mississippi River.

Wander Downtown & Admire the Murals
Downtown Carson City is ideal for strolling, featuring colorful murals, boutique shops, and a friendly small-town atmosphere. Don’t forget your camera—art is around every corner.

If you’re there in September, be sure to check out the Carson City Murals & Music Festival, which brings in local and nationally recognized muralists to paint their projects live, allowing you to watch, along with artist lectures and a variety of live music. It’s stunning to watch these beautiful, larger-than-life items come to life.

Tour the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center
This museum and cultural center, operated by the Federal Government for 90 years, shares the stories of Native American students (mainly from the Great Basin tribes) who once lived and studied here. The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center is a moving, educational, and beautifully curated space. The docents were so helpful and eager to explain their school; many of them were alums.

I wasn’t familiar with these Native American schools (a type of boarding school) and was fascinated by all the information I learned. From athletic uniforms, class photos, and school spirit memorabilia to stunning grounds dotted with well-maintained native rhyolitic stone buildings and incredible artwork by Great Basin Native Artists, this stop is perfect for anyone. And free!
Don’t miss the adorable well appointed gift shop.

Feast on Local Flavor and Sip on Brews
When hunger strikes, head to Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint—a quirky, can’t-miss spot serving inventive dishes that highlight Carson City’s creative food scene. Sassafras’ Fried Cheese Cheeseburger blew my mind…so darned good, with a crispy fried cheese layer that I was thinking about weeks after my visit. Salads and pizzas are also tasty options.

Carson City also boasts a growing craft beer scene. Grab a pint (or two) at one of its many local breweries. We tried Shoe Tree Brewing Company, located right beside Sassafras, and ordered food from the restaurant to be delivered to the brewery. We were also able to take our dog that way. Shoe Tree has indoor and outdoor seating.

Soak in Carson Hot Springs
Should have seen the look on my face when I learned I could unwind in the natural mineral waters of Carson Hot Springs—perfect after a day of sightseeing. This geothermal springs attraction offers two options: two outdoor pools or private soaking rooms, which cost $30 for a two-hour session.
Reservations are not accepted; everything is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Drive the Kit Carson Trail
Take a self-guided walk (or drive) along the Kit Carson Trail to see Carson City’s gorgeous Victorian homes and historic buildings, some from as early as the 1800s. The influx of silver and gold rush money created a wealthy segment and fostered luxury living in Carson City.
Explore the Nevada State Museum
Allow yourself at least two hours to explore this fascinating museum, which features exhibits on Nevada’s natural history, mining past, and cultural heritage. Admission is $10 for adults. Explore exhibits, including a walk-through mining exhibit, a ghost town, a mammoth skeleton, and Native American artifacts.
Part of the Nevada State Museum was the former U.S. Mint, where coins were minted from 1870 to 1893.

Hotel Suggestion
We thoroughly enjoyed the convenience and service at the Staybridge Suites in Carson City. This 94-suite hotel has modern rooms and furnishings, plus a complimentary breakfast (as in a good one you won’t want to miss!), beautiful outdoor pool and hot tub, and full kitchens in the rooms.

Great Day Trips from Carson City
- Carson Valley: Just south of town, Carson Valley is full of sweeping scenery, heritage farms, and charming small towns, such as Gardnerville (historic Dangberg Home Ranch Park, Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, and J.T. Basque Bar and Dining Room), and Genoa (the oldest town in Nevada, base of Sierra Nevada mountains).
- Lake Tahoe: A short drive away, Lake Tahoe delivers crystal-clear waters, beaches, hiking, and some of the most stunning mountain views in the country.

Carson City may not be as flashy as Las Vegas or as outdoorsy as Reno, but that’s its magic. It’s a city where history, culture, and Nevada spirit come together. Whether you’re chasing ghost stories, soaking in hot springs, or setting off on day trips, Carson City is one Nevada destination you don’t want to miss.
